Overview
11 personnel puts 1 RB, 1 TE, and 3 WRs on the field, making it the most common and most flexible package in Madden. It creates a balanced offensive identity where you can run zone concepts out of Singleback and Pistol or spread the field into Empty and Bunch looks without ever changing personnel. Most opponents answer with nickel, which means a slot corner or a smaller third safety is now responsible for your TE or third receiver, and that substitution is exactly what you attack with mismatched route combos and light box runs.
Strengths
- Forces nickel or dime personnel on the field, giving you a lighter box for inside zone, HB counter, and QB draw while the defense sits in a 4-2-5 shell.
- Massive formation flexibility from a single package: you can motion into Empty Bunch, Trips TE, or condensed Tight looks and never tip run or pass through a substitution.
- Creates speed mismatches when a linebacker or box safety is left on your TE, especially on seam routes, corners, and wheel routes out of Y Off and Flex alignments.
- Gives you a complete route tree with three receivers plus a TE, so mesh, drive, and flood concepts all have a natural fourth option instead of forcing checkdowns.
- The single TE still blocks in play-action and RPO looks, which keeps the run threat honest and lets you sell play-action rollouts without giving away the call presnap.
Weaknesses
- Only one true blocker beyond the offensive line, so heavy edge pressure and simulated blitzes off the TE side can collapse the pocket before your intermediate routes develop.
- Short yardage and goal line situations are harder to convert because you lack the extra gap that 12 or 21 personnel provides in the run game.
- Opponents who lock in nickel with a fast slot corner can erase your third receiver and force everything back to the TE, especially against Cover 2 Man with a user-controlled defender sitting on the seam.
- Players become predictable when they only run Shotgun Empty and Bunch variants, letting the defense presnap into pattern matching zones and pinch the flats.
- A single high safety look with a user in the middle of the field takes away the crossers and digs this package leans on, forcing you to check into low percentage outside throws.
