Overview
11 personnel puts 1 RB, 1 TE, and 3 WRs on the field, giving you the most balanced and formation-rich package in Madden, with over 200 sets ranging from Singleback Doubles and Pistol Bunch to Shotgun Trips TE and Shotgun Empty Bunch. Because the three receivers force defenses into Nickel or Dime to match slot speed, while the tight end and running back keep inside zone and power runs viable, opponents must choose between getting gashed on the ground in light boxes or giving up coverage mismatches in base. The TE is the matchup key: flexed or detached in sets like Shotgun Y Off Trips or Shotgun Trips Y Iso, he pulls a linebacker or safety out of the box, exposing the defense's true coverage shell before the snap.
Strengths
- Forces Nickel or Dime personnel, letting you check to inside zone or counter against 6 man boxes, while the TE and RB still give you a hat to block the extra defender.
- Massive formation variety means you can run the same core concepts (Mesh, Stick, Flood, Drive) from Shotgun Bunch, Shotgun Trips TE, and Singleback Y Trips, disguising tendencies without leaving your personnel group.
- TE isolation in sets like Shotgun Trips Y Iso and Shotgun Trey Y Iso creates a clear LB or safety mismatch, perfect for option routes, seams, and quick slants against man coverage.
- RPOs and play-action rollouts are elite here because the run threat is real, holding hook defenders and flat droppers long enough to hit deep crossers and corner routes.
- The RB can motion or align out into Empty sets (Shotgun Empty Trey, Shotgun Empty Bunch Tight) without a substitution, instantly turning a balanced look into a 5 wide man beater that exposes slow linebackers.
Weaknesses
- Only one TE plus one RB limits max protect options, so heavy pressure like nano blitzes and overloaded edges forces you to burn hot routes or slide protection just to survive.
- Short yardage and goal line runs suffer against base or goal line personnel, because a single TE cannot consistently handle a DE, leaving you outnumbered at the point of attack.
- Since 11 is the default package for most players, opponents build their entire defensive playbook around it, keying on popular Bunch and Trips TE concepts with sticky Cover 3 Match and Cover 4 Drop adjustments.
- Formation tendencies leak easily: aligned RB side, TE flex position, and Y Off tags often telegraph run or pass direction, letting a user-controlled defender cheat to the strength before the snap.
- If your TE and third WR lack speed or route running, Dime defenses can match up with faster DBs everywhere, removing the mismatch that makes 11 personnel dangerous.
