Y Off Trips Nasty takes the standard Shotgun trips look and tightens the splits, stacking the three receiver side inside the numbers with the Y aligned off the ball behind the formation edge. That nasty split is the whole point: the outside receiver sits close enough to the tackle that press man defenders have to declare early, and the off ball Y gets a free release with no possibility of a jam. Compared to wider trips sets in Shotgun, the compressed spacing shrinks throwing windows for zone defenders but massively expands the horizontal running room on crossers, drags, and pivots. Defenses that walk a nickel out to the trips side leave a two on two look to the back side, and defenses that stay balanced concede leverage inside.
The 11 personnel package (1 RB, 1 TE) is what makes the set flexible enough to live in as a primary formation. You get a receiving tight end who can be flexed into the slot or left off the line as a movable chess piece, a single back who can chip, swing, or take the Inside Zone and Counter Y handoffs, and three receivers who force base personnel off the field. Tags on this set include 3DRB, Gadget, Power HB, and SLWR, so you can substitute a scat back for the screen and swing game, drop in a power back for Counter Y between the tackles, or slide a slot specialist into the number two spot to attack a linebacker in man coverage.
Concept variety here is genuinely deep. The Mtn family (Mtn Curls Y-Wheel, Mtn X Drag, Mtn Y Pivot, Mtn Y Corner, Mtn HB Choice, Mtn HB Out) gives you a mesh and option route package that punishes man coverage with natural traffic. Double Cross, Dagger Whip, and Slot 2 Buc attack zone shells at intermediate depth, while Flood HB Swing floods a single coverage side with three levels. PA Double Post is your shot play off the run action, RPO Read Y Flat and Inside Zone keep the box honest, and HB Slip Screen punishes aggressive interior pressure. That mix of run, RPO, quick game, and deep shot out of one alignment is what makes the set hard to key on.
Diagnose leverage pre snap: if the nickel is stacked inside the number two receiver, run Mtn Y Pivot or Mtn HB Choice to work the option break away from his help. If he is outside leverage, hit Slot 2 Buc or the flat concept.
On third and medium, Dagger Whip is your primary call. Hot route the number three receiver to a quick out as an outlet against blitz, and user the whip receiver against man coverage.
Use motion on the off ball Y to identify coverage: if a defender travels, you have man and every Mtn concept becomes live. If the defense rotates zones, go to Double Cross or Flood HB Swing.
Set up PA Double Post by leaning on Inside Zone and Counter Y from this exact set first. Once the safeties start crashing on the run action, the double post shot opens over the top.
Call HB Slip Screen when your opponent starts bringing interior pressure or crowding the A gaps. Pair it with a 3DRB tag so you get a back with the receiving and elusiveness ratings to actually make the play work.
RPO Read Y Flat is your answer against light boxes and man free looks. Read the flat defender, hand it off if he widens, throw the flat if he sits in the box.
