Mtn Y Pivot lines up from Shotgun Y Off Trips Nasty with a pre-snap motion that shifts the trips receiver across the formation before the snap. Off the snap, the Y (TE) runs a pivot route, breaking outside then snapping back inside to sit in the shallow zone, while the two outside trips receivers push vertically up the seam and sideline, and the backside X runs a shallow crosser underneath. The blocking keeps the RB in to help protect while the QB reads the pivot first as the underneath outlet before progressing to the vertical shots outside, making this a man beater designed to exploit defenders who overrun the pivot's initial fake.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the motion man, if he trails across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the pivot and crosser combo underneath. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety often signals man coverage behind it which makes the pivot route and shallow crosser difficult to disrupt. Post-snap, track the flow of the middle linebacker, if he sinks into a deep zone drop instead of matching the pivot route this play is likely facing a zone shell and the vertical seam route becomes the better answer. Be wary of user-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the pivot's break point, a smart user can jump the route and undercut the throw if the QB does not manipulate the defender with pump fakes or eye discipline. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can be problematic since that defender can squat on the pivot route, so look to bail out to the vertical trips routes stretching the sideline against that shell.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you have man coverage and the pivot route becomes a high percentage answer.
Prioritize the Y pivot as your first read against blitz looks since it gets open quickly underneath and gives the QB a fast release valve before pressure arrives.
Save this play for third and short or third and medium situations where the pivot's quick separation and the crosser underneath give you multiple options to move the chains.
Pair this with Mtn Y Corner or Mtn HB Choice in your play-calling sequence since both share the same trips motion look but attack different levels, keeping the defense guessing between shallow and deep answers.
If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, look to the vertical seam shot on the outside trips route since single high rotations often leave the deep middle exposed after the safety commits to the pivot action.
