Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Nasty is a straightforward zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB and the offensive line flowing in unison to one side. The diagram shows the line stepping in sync with a double team look at the point of attack, with the RB path bending backside for a cutback if the frontside gets clogged. This is a zone run play designed to beat gap and blitz-heavy fronts, and the primary read is the frontside double team: the HB presses the play side hole, reads the first covered gap on the double team block, and works backside if the alley closes.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a two-high shell or single-high safety look, since single-high alignments typically mean an extra run defender in the box that can clog the cutback lane. Watch the Mike linebacker depth and width, if he is stacked tight behind the double team he is reading run fit fast and will fill the frontside gap quickly. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flowing down hard from depth, that is the biggest threat to blow up the cutback lane before the HB can press it. This run gets shut down by gap-exchange stunts and cross-blitzes that shoot the backside A-gap before the line can climb to the second level. It beats spread-out nickel and dime fronts with light boxes, especially when the trips side removes a linebacker or safety from the run fit entirely.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the trips side pulls a safety or corner out of the run fit.

Use the trips formation to bait defenses into base or nickel personnel, then hammer Inside Zone when you see a light front with the linebackers playing downhill instead of scraping.

Hot route the backside receiver on a quick slant or hitch if you see a walked-up corner threatening to crash the edge, this keeps the defense honest without changing personnel.

Pair this run with RPO Read Y Flat and PA Double Post from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play-action shot off identical formation and motion.

Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up later play-action shots from the same look.
