Mtn X Drag is a trips based passing concept out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Nasty that features a drag route crossing underneath a deep dig, with two vertical clear out routes on the trips side and a shallow drag from the backside X receiver. The three receiver trips side stacks a deep out breaking dig with two verticals stacked outside to occupy the corner and deep safety, while the X receiver runs the drag underneath from the backside to give the quarterback a quick answer against pressure. Protection looks to be a standard shotgun pass set with no visible motion or screen elements, making this a man and zone beater built on horizontal stretch combined with vertical stress. Primary read progression starts with the X drag underneath, then works to the dig sitting down over the middle, and finally to the verticals on the trips side if the safety bites down on the shallow crossers.
Watch for a single high safety pre snap which tells you the dig route from trips will have a clean throwing lane over the middle. If the cornerback on the X receiver is playing tight man coverage, expect the drag to win quickly since it crosses the defender's face and forces a trail technique. Post snap, identify if the middle linebacker or a user controlled defender is sitting in a lurk position over the drag, since that defender can jump the route and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 and cover 4 shells with deep zone drops can be exposed by the two verticals on the trips side pulling defenders vertically and opening the underneath drag and dig combo. This play is shut down by disciplined zone defenses that keep a linebacker spying the drag lane while playing two deep safeties, since it removes the easy underneath completion and forces a low percentage throw into traffic.
Use this play on early downs or third and medium when you need a horizontal answer against man coverage since the X drag creates natural separation off any man defender playing outside leverage. Check the deep safety alignment pre snap, if you see a single high safety the dig from the trips side will have room to sit down in the void behind linebackers. Hot route the drag into a deeper crosser against soft zone shells if the underneath defenders are sitting at five yards or less. Pair this play with Mtn Curls Y-Wheel or Mtn Y Corner in your play calling sequence since both attack similar trips formations but stress different levels, keeping the defense honest on where to key. Against blitz heavy defenses, get the ball out quickly to the drag as your built in hot route since it clears the line of scrimmage fast and beats most nano blitz packages before the pocket collapses.
