Dagger Whip is a trips-based dropback pass out of Shotgun Y Off Trips Nasty that stacks a deep dig with an underneath whip route. From the trips side, the outside receiver clears vertically to hold the deep safety while the inside slot runs a deep dig across the middle, and the third trips receiver runs a short whip route working back underneath into the void. The backside receiver on the far side works a deep post to stress the opposite half of the field, while the RB releases into a check release flat route as the final outlet. This is a strong Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack zone drops, with the primary read starting on the dig route working the middle hole, then the whip route underneath, and the deep post backside as the shot play if the safety bites.
Diagnose deep safety alignment pre-snap: a two-high shell confirms Cover 2 or Cover 4, which is exactly what the dig and whip combo is designed to exploit in the seam and flat. Watch the flat defender or corner on the trips side post-snap, since if he sinks with the whip route it opens the window for the dig sitting behind him. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender depth, because a shallow drop invites the whip route completion while a deep drop opens the dig route behind him. Beware of Cover 3 sky or match zone concepts where a safety rotates down to rob the dig route, since that user-controlled lurk defender can undercut the intermediate crosser. Man coverage with a single high safety is the toughest matchup for this concept, since the dig has to win against man leverage without the picks that trips alignment normally creates, so check for press corners and inside leverage before committing to this call.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since this concept is built specifically to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone drops with the dig sitting behind the underneath zone and in front of the deep safety.
If the corner presses the trips outside receiver, expect a clear release to occupy the deep zone, so shift your eyes immediately to the dig and whip combo working left to right.
Use the whip route as your safety valve against zone if the dig is not open, since it settles underneath linebackers and gives you a quick completion to move the chains on third and medium.
Pair this play with Double Cross or Mtn X Drag in your play-calling sequence, since those crossing concepts look similar pre-snap but attack different levels, keeping zone defenders honest and forcing hesitation on drops.
On third and long, prioritize the backside post read early in your progression if you see single high safety rotate away from it, since that opens a explosive play window before working back to the dig and whip.
