Tackle Over Trips is the unbalanced answer inside Shotgun, taking 11 personnel and shifting an extra tackle to the strong side while stacking three receivers to the opposite field. That alignment forces the defense to make a declaration before the snap: either flip the front to the extra lineman and leave the trips side light, or stay balanced and let you run behind two tackles on the same edge. Most sets in Shotgun ask you to win with route distribution alone. This one wins with alignment math first, then hands you an RPO menu on top of it.
The play list is built around that tension. RPO Read Bubble, RPO Bubble Y Pop, and RPO Read X Smoke all put the ball in your hands with a run action attached, so you are reading the flat defender over trips instead of guessing. Inside Zone, HB Power O, Outside Zone, and Read Option run into the tackle over surface where the extra body creates a genuine double team at the point of attack. PA Read punishes the linebacker who starts crashing that side, and Fake Screen Wheel plus HB Slip Screen are the gadget calls you break out once the defense starts flying to run keys.
Personnel-wise, the TE aligned as the extra tackle rarely draws a nickel or safety, which means the trips side is often covered by three defenders against three receivers with no extra help rotating over. That isolates your slot and the number three receiver in space, and the 3DRB tag matters here because the back is a real receiving threat on the bubble and screen game rather than a decoy. Anyone in Cover 3 who does not rotate is giving you an easy leverage win on the outside.
Read the count over trips before the snap: if the defense has three or fewer defenders on that side with no deep help rotating, take the bubble or smoke throw every time
Use the unbalanced surface on early downs to establish Inside Zone and Outside Zone, then run PA Read and Fake Screen Wheel off the same look once the second level starts crashing
Motion the number three receiver across pre-snap to diagnose coverage, and if a defender follows you know it is man and the wheel and slant hot routes become your primary answers
On third down with the 3DRB tag in, HB Slip Screen out of trips gives your back space against a defense that has widened to cover the stack, but do not go back to it more than twice a game
Hot route the point man on trips to a curl or corner when you see soft Cover 3, since the RPO run action pulls the flat defender down and leaves the sideline open behind him
Against a front that flips to match your extra tackle, run Read Option or Outside Zone back to the now-light trips side instead of fighting the strength
