RPO Read X Smoke lines up out of Shotgun Tackle Over Trips with the run action to the HB and a bubble-style smoke route from the outside receiver at X, who releases quickly to the flat while the trips receivers stay in as blockers or decoys. The offensive line runs its inside zone blocking scheme, giving the quarterback a true give-or-throw read based on how the alignment reacts to the run action. This is an RPO built to punish overaggressive box defenders: if the defense crashes down on the run fit, the quarterback pulls and fires the quick smoke to X for an easy pickup, and if the numbers stay even the ball gets handed off into the zone run.
Watch the flat defender or overhang responsible for X, aggressive run fits and hard downhill triggers open up the smoke throw instantly. Man coverage on X with no help underneath is a green light to take the quick smoke every time since there is no leverage to stop it. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with a slot corner sinking into a deep zone leave the flat wide open for the smoke, this beats most zone drops that prioritize depth over width. If the defense shows a nano blitz or edge pressure package, expect the quarterback to get the ball out fast on the smoke rather than eat a sack on the zone run. User-controlled defenders sitting the flat or crashing hard on run action are the biggest threat, if you see a human spy the smoke route bail out and trust the handoff instead.
Check the defender aligned over the X receiver before the snap, if he is playing off or bailing into a deep zone you have a clean read to throw the smoke immediately.
Count the box defenders pre-snap, if the count favors the run (6 or fewer in the box) lean toward the handoff and let the RPO read confirm it post-snap.
Use the smoke route as a built-in answer to slot or overhang blitzes since the ball gets out before extra rushers can affect the play.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Power O from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the RPO key and start cheating the box.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) where defenses are more willing to sell out against the run, giving the smoke throw a bigger cushion.
