Shotgun Trey puts three receivers to one side in a stacked, staggered alignment with the tight end attached or flexed as the number three, leaving a single receiver isolated on the backside with the running back offset next to the quarterback. That is the entire value proposition: unlike balanced Shotgun sets that split two and two, Trey forces the defense to declare its strength pre-snap. Nickel and dime shells have to either roll a safety over the top of the trips side or leave the backside X on an island, and either answer gives you a read before the ball is snapped. If they rotate, you have your isolated receiver one on one with no help. If they stay even, you have a numbers advantage on the trips side with three route runners against a two deep, two under look.
The 11 personnel grouping is what makes this set flexible enough to run in every situation. You keep a legitimate receiving tight end on the field, so the defense cannot comfortably drop into heavy dime personnel without giving up leverage in the run game, and Inside Zone plus HB Delay punish that immediately. At the same time, the trips alignment lets you attack with true three man route combos like Levels Sail, Stick, and China Smash, all of which create natural high low and horizontal stretches that beat both zone spacing and man leverage. Verticals Y Drag is the base concept that hits everything: three vertical stems clearing out while the tight end drags underneath into vacated space.
Where Trey separates itself from other Shotgun sets is the gadget and RPO layer. RPO Alert WR Screen and Fake Screen Wheel let you run the same alignment and force the defense to defend the flat, the box, and the deep third at once. PA Post Shot gives you a legitimate shot play off the same run action, and the 3DRB and SLWR tags mean you can get your best pass catching back and your slot specialist on the field together. That combination turns Trey into a set you can live in on third down without tipping your hand.
Read the safety rotation first. If the defense slides a safety over the trips, work the isolated backside receiver with a hot route fade or slant. If they stay symmetrical, attack the trips side numbers with Levels Sail or China Smash.
Use Stick and 45 Quick Base on third and short to medium against blitz heavy opponents, and hot route the back on an out or a wheel to give yourself a pressure release.
Save PA Post Shot and Fake Screen Wheel for after you have established Inside Zone and RPO Alert WR Screen. The play action and gadget looks only hit when the defense has committed to the run and the flat.
Against man coverage, motion the inside trips receiver across the formation pre-snap to confirm the shell, then work Fade Smash or Verticals Y Drag into the leverage you just created.
Lean on HB Slip Screen and HB Delay when opponents start bringing pressure from the backside, since both concepts turn the blitz into blocked defenders and open field for your 3DRB back.
