Breakdown

Fade Smash out of Shotgun Trey pairs a corner fade on the outside receiver with a smash route (hard flat or short curl) from the inside receiver, creating a high low stretch on the boundary corner. This is a classic Cover 2 beater since the fade attacks the deep quarter before the safety can rotate over, while the underneath smash route occupies the corner sitting in the flat zone. The primary read starts with the fade against single high or two deep shells, then works down to the smash route if the corner sinks or the safety jumps the vertical, with the running back check down as the final progression against a hot blitz.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the corner's alignment: if he is playing outside shade with a safety rotated to that side, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 and lean toward the fade throw. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, a linebacker or nickel sitting shallow signals zone coverage and opens the smash route as the higher percentage throw. If the corner presses and turns to run with the fade receiver man to man, look for a safety cheating over the top in Cover 1 or Cover 3, which shuts down the vertical shot. User controlled defenders lurking in the flat can jump the smash route, so hold that throw until the receiver clears the underneath defender's zone drop. A blitz off the edge with man coverage behind it kills the timing on the fade, so get the ball out on the smash or check down before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the corner into showing man or zone leverage before the snap.

Against Cover 2, throw the fade with anticipation right as the receiver clears the corner’s outside hip, since the safety cannot get there in time.

If the corner sits deep in Cover 2 or Cover 4, work the smash route underneath for a quick, controlled gain instead of forcing the fade into a squeezed window.

Pair Fade Smash with China Smash or PA Post Shot in your play calling script so defenses cannot key on the same flat curl look every snap.

Best called on second and medium or third and short, since the smash route gives you a safe conversion option if the fade window closes.
