Fake Screen Wheel out of Shotgun Trey is a play-action screen concept designed to bait aggressive linebackers and defenders keying the flat before releasing the running back vertically on a wheel route. The offensive line sells the screen fake up front while the RB slips out of the fake and turns the corner upfield, aiming to isolate a linebacker or slow-footed defender in coverage. This is a play-action screen and a man beater at its core, though it can also stress cover 2 and cover 3 zone defenders who bite on the run action. The primary read progression starts with the wheel route out of the backfield, then works to any underneath crossers or check-down options if the wheel is jumped.
Key the middle linebacker and any defender aligned near the running back pre-snap, since a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone or crashing hard on run fakes is the biggest tell this play is live. Watch for man coverage matchups on the RB, especially a slower linebacker or safety in man, as this is the ideal matchup the wheel route is designed to exploit. If the defense shows cover 3 or cover 4 with a deep flat defender staying home instead of biting on the screen fake, the wheel will likely get squeezed and the quarterback should move to the check-down. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or blitzing off the edge, since a delayed wheel release can get the running back caught in the backfield against a well-timed blitz. Against cover 2 with hard-flat corners, the wheel can still work if the corner bites on a receiver's route to the flat, but if the corner sits and reads the RB immediately, look to the underneath route or throw it away.
Call this play when the defense has shown aggressive linebacker fits against screens or run action in prior series, since the wheel exploits defenders who crash down expecting the bubble or swing screen. Use it on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium so the play-action fake actually holds defenders, since obvious passing downs make defenders less likely to respect the run fake. Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like a linebacker walked out over the RB or a safety cheating toward the trips side, both of which signal the wheel has a strong chance to win. If the defense shows two deep safeties with soft zone drops, consider hot routing the underneath crosser to a deeper in-route to attack the vacated middle instead of forcing the wheel into a zone defender's lane. Pair this call with HB Slip Screen or RPO Alert WR Screen earlier in a drive to condition the defense to jump screen action, then hit this play action wheel to punish overaggressive pursuit.
