Verticals Y Drag out of Shotgun Trey sends three receivers vertically up the field while the Y (tight end) runs a drag route underneath across the middle, creating a natural high-low stretch on the defense. This is a classic four verts concept married with a drag, making it a strong Cover 2 beater (attacking the seams between the corners and safeties) and a Cover 3 beater (overloading the deep third with three verticals). The primary read progression starts with the drag route against zone to pick up an easy underneath completion, then works to the vertical seam routes if the drag is taken away, and finally to the outside verticals for the deep shot if the safeties bite on the seams.
Identify two deep safeties pre-snap, this signals Cover 2 and tells you the drag route will have room to operate underneath the linebackers. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, this often indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1, meaning the seams will be your best window before the safety can rob the middle. Track the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep to cover a seam threat the drag route behind him becomes wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or spying the drag, this is the most common way good competitive players shut this play down. Look for disguised blitzes where linebackers show blitz then bail into zone, this can bait you into an early throw, so confirm the coverage shell before committing to your first read.
Check pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties tips Cover 2 and the drag becomes your immediate answer against a soft zone underneath.
If you see single high safety indicating Cover 3, key the seam routes since the underneath defenders often widen with the verticals, opening throwing lanes.
Use the drag as your checkdown against man coverage if the corners get depth quickly, it is a built in man beater versus press or trail technique.
Hot route the backside vertical into a comeback or dig if you are facing a heavy Cover 4 shell to prevent your receiver from running into double coverage.
Pair this play with Fade Smash or China Smash earlier in a drive to condition defenders to bite on shorter routes, then hit Verticals Y Drag for the explosive play once the safeties creep up.
Best called on 2nd or 3rd and medium to long distance when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells expecting a pass but have not yet respected the vertical threat.
