Doubles Z Close Wk is the weak side variant of Shotgun Doubles with the Z receiver pulled down tight next to the tackle, creating a compressed 2x2 alignment with the strength flipped away from the traditional Doubles look. Out of 11 personnel, you get one back offset in the gun, a tight end attached, and a slot-adjacent Z that behaves more like a second inside receiver than a boundary threat. That tight Z split is the whole point: it shortens the release, gives you a free run at inside leverage against man coverage, and pulls the corner or nickel into the box area where he becomes easy to identify pre-snap.
The compression changes how the play art works compared to standard Doubles or Doubles Off. Dagger Z Comeback and Dagger X Comeback both put a vertical clearout over the top with a dig or comeback working underneath, and the tight Z alignment means the seam runner occupies the safety earlier in the rep. Deep Post Switch and Double Post attack single high directly, while Mtn Switch Wheel and Mtn Fk Screen Wheel use the reduced splits to create natural rub action off the line. The RPO family (RPO Read Bubble, RPO Zone Read Bubble) turns the tight Z into a legitimate bubble target with blockers already in position, so you are not asking a receiver to run twelve yards horizontally before the ball arrives.
Where this set separates itself is the run and screen game married to those RPO looks. Inside Zone, Mtn Inside Zone, and HB Base give you real gap integrity because the Z alignment functions as an extra blocker on the edge, and the Power HB tag means you can leverage a downhill back without changing personnel. HB Slip Screen and PA Jailbreak Screen punish aggressive edge pressure, and Redzone Fork plus Mtn Z Spot give you tight window answers inside the twenty where compressed splits shrink the defense's usable coverage space.
Read the flat defender's alignment on RPO Read Bubble and RPO Zone Read Bubble before the snap. If he is inside the tight Z with no help, throw the bubble. If he widens, hand the ball off and let Inside Zone hit the vacated gap.
On third and medium, run Dagger Z Comeback and check the safety count. Single high means take the dig or the vertical seam. Two high means work the comeback into the void behind the corner.
Use Mtn Switch Wheel against Cover 3 and Cover 2, where the wheel out of a compressed split gets vertical before the corner can reroute. Hot route the tight end to a curl if you want a checkdown option underneath.
Set up PA Jailbreak Screen after several Inside Zone and HB Base reps so the defense is flowing downhill. This is your answer to committed edge pressure and aggressive user linebackers.
Inside the twenty, lean on Redzone Fork and Mtn Z Spot. Compressed alignments shrink the throwing lanes for the defense too, and the fork concept gives you two options on the same read against both man and zone.
