Breakdown

Dagger X Comeback pairs the classic Dagger concept (deep dig from the inside receiver clearing out underneath for a curl or in-cut) on one side with an X receiver comeback route on the other, creating a natural high low and horizontal stretch versus zone shells while also giving you a two way go against man coverage. The TE or slot works a seam or dig to occupy the middle linebacker and single high safety, while the X comeback sits down in front of trailing corners for a quick, controlled throw. Primary read progression starts with the deep dig or seam to see if it splits the zone, then works to the X comeback as the built in answer against Cover 2 or Cover 3 defenders sinking underneath.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safeties before the snap, single high means the dig has a better shot to split the seam while two high favors the comeback sitting underneath. Watch the flat defender's depth and leverage on the X side, if he sinks too deep on the comeback you have an easy completion in front of him. Key the middle linebacker's drop, a deep drop into the dig window shuts down your first read and forces an immediate progression to the comeback. Beware Cover 3 sky or cloud looks where the corner sits at the sticks disguising a jump on the comeback route, if the corner does not release upfield with the deep route stay patient and use pump fakes to bait him off his spot. Watch for user blitzers off the edge, since this route combo takes a beat to develop against man coverage a delayed pressure package can collapse the pocket before your dig or comeback fully clears.

Usage Tips

Check the pre snap safety alignment first, two deep safeties or a rotating single high shell tells you whether the dig or the comeback will be open faster.

Against Cover 2 look off the flat defender and throw the X comeback on time before the corner can sink and undercut it, this route is designed to sit right in the honey hole.

Use hot routes to adjust the underneath backer or TE route into a spot or flat if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, giving yourself a quicker outlet.

This play works best on second and medium to third and short since the comeback route needs a manageable sticks distance to convert.

Pair this call with Dagger Z Comeback and Slants from the same set so the defense has to defend both sides of the field with mirrored comeback and dig concepts, forcing user defenders to guess which side gets the ball.
