Defensive Reads
Watch for man coverage indicators pre-snap like cornerbacks pressed on receivers and safeties showing single high, since man defenders will bite on the play-action and get sealed by the screen blockers. Key on blitz packages where linebackers or nickel defenders crash the line immediately after the snap, since that overpursuit is exactly what the screen is designed to exploit. If the defense shows a soft zone shell with linebackers sitting at their landmarks instead of flowing to the fake, this play is vulnerable because underneath defenders can read the screen and close the passing lane. User-controlled defenders who stay patient and spy the backfield instead of biting on play-action can jump the screen route and blow it up for a loss. Look for a defensive end or edge rusher who stays home and does not crash upfield, since he is the key threat to string the screen out before the blockers get set.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and short when you have already shown play-action pass or run out of this same personnel to condition the defense to bite. Check pre-snap for man coverage or blitz indicators like linebackers creeping or safeties rotating down, since those shells get eaten alive by the screen wall. Hot route the clear-out receiver to a deep vertical if he is not already running one to guarantee he occupies the deep defenders. Pair this in your play-calling sequence with Mtn Inside Zone or Inside Zone to sell the run action first, then mix in PA Jailbreak Screen once the linebackers start flowing hard downhill. Avoid calling this against zone-heavy defenses that sit at the line, since underneath zone defenders can read and jump the screen before blockers get out in front.
