Mtn Switch Wheel is a play-action style route combo out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close Wk that features a switch release on the left side with two receivers crossing paths before both climbing vertically up the sideline and seam, creating natural traffic against man coverage. On the right side the TE runs a wheel route out of the backfield area, releasing outside and up the boundary while a slot receiver clears out underneath with a quick in cut to hold linebackers, and another receiver runs a shallow drag across the middle to occupy the second level. The primary read progression starts with the wheel route matchup out of the switch release, then works to the deep vertical routes on the switch side if the linebacker or safety bites on the flat, with the shallow drag as the checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: a single high safety often signals man coverage underneath which favors the wheel route matchup, while two deep safeties suggest zone drops that make the shallow drag more valuable. Watch the linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the TE before the snap, since a slower linebacker in that spot is a mismatch the wheel route will exploit once he gets picked off by the switch release traffic. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender flowing toward the flat or wheel route early, because that indicates a lurk or spy technique designed to jump the route, which means you should look immediately to the switch verticals on the opposite side. This play is vulnerable to press man coverage with strong outside cornerback play combined with a rat linebacker in the middle to disrupt the drag route and take away the checkdown. Cover 3 with an outside cornerback sinking to reroute the wheel route can shut this down, so if you see that shell pre-snap consider hot routing the drag into a deeper crossing route to attack the vacated middle zone.
Usage Tips
Use this play against man coverage looks where you can identify a linebacker or slower defender matched up on the TE running the wheel, since the switch release creates natural rub traffic that delays the defender's transition. Motion pre-snap to confirm man versus zone: if the defender follows across the formation it is man, which is when the wheel and switch verticals become high value reads. Hot route the shallow drag receiver deeper into a dig if you see a two high shell sitting back, since that opens more room underneath for the drag to work as a zone beater against Cover 4 or Cover 2. This play works well on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses expect a quicker underneath concept, catching them off guard with the wheel breaking open deep. Pair this call with Mtn Curl Combo or Mtn Z Spot earlier in a series to condition the defense to expect quick underneath throws, then hit the wheel route for an explosive play when linebackers start jumping short routes.
