Mtn Z Spot lines up out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close Wk with pre-snap motion bringing a receiver in tight before the snap. The route diagram shows a classic Spot concept on the right side: the outside receiver runs a quick corner/flag route, the slot man runs a hitch/settle underneath, and the TE or slot runs a short pivot/flat route into the vacated space, while the backside receiver runs a vertical go route up the numbers and the running back releases on a flat route to the opposite side of the field. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat and hook defender with the pivot route while the corner route occupies the deflected zone defender, and the primary read progression starts with the underneath pivot/spot route, then works to the flat, then to the corner route if a defender bites on the shorter routes.
Pre-snap, check the corner alignment on the vertical route side, if he is playing off man or soft zone the corner route can be jumped by an athletic user defender Watch the flat defender and hook/curl linebacker after the snap, this play is designed to put them in a bind between the pivot route and the flat route Zone drops with a fast-flowing linebacker to the trips or spot side can undercut the pivot route if the user gets an early jump on the quarterback's eyes Man coverage with underneath hold or press can disrupt the short spot route timing, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and look to the backside vertical route Watch for a disguised blitz off the edge since the running back leaking to the flat on the backside leaves the protection thin if extra rushers come from the strong side
Motion the receiver pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows across the formation
If you see a Cover 3 shell with the corner sitting deep, target the underneath spot/pivot route since the zone defender has to choose between the flat and the pivot man
Use the running back flat route as a checkdown against blitz-heavy fronts since it gets him out quickly on obvious blitz downs like third and long
Pair this play with Mtn Curl Combo or Mtn Switch Wheel in the same set to keep defenses guessing between spot concepts and switch releases
On third and short, hot route the vertical go route into a shorter comeback if the corner is playing tight man to give yourself a quicker outlet
