Mtn Fk Screen Wheel is a play-action screen concept out of Shotgun Doubles Z Close Wk that combines a running back wheel route with backside receiver clear-outs. At the snap, the two outside receivers (red and gold routes) run vertical clear-out patterns to pull coverage away from the flat, while the inside gold receiver runs a deep in cut behind the line, and the backside receiver (light blue) works a wheel route out of the backfield or slot to the flat and up the sideline. This is designed as a screen and play-action hybrid that beats aggressive man coverage and blitzes by getting the wheel defender isolated in space, with the primary read being the wheel route in the flat first, progressing to the deep in-cut route if the wheel is covered.
Defensive Reads
Check pre-snap safety depth, if both safeties are deep at 10-plus yards it signals two-high shell and the wheel route has more room to work down the sideline Watch for man coverage on the running back or slot defender responsible for the wheel, if he lines up tight and follows motion aggressively the wheel will win versus man beaters Identify blitz packages by counting the box, if the defense brings extra rushers off the edge the play-action fake slows their pursuit and opens the flat immediately Zone defenses with a flat defender sitting underneath can jump the wheel route early, so key linebacker depth and leverage before committing to the primary read Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined outside cornerbacks staying deep can shut this down by forcing the quarterback to check down to the deep in-cut route instead
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or second and short to disguise a run look before releasing the wheel route into open grass
Motion your running back or slot receiver pre-snap to identify man coverage, if the defender follows the motion man you have a strong indicator the wheel route will win
Hot route the backside clear-out receiver into a quick slant if you see zone shells sitting deep to give yourself an underneath outlet
Pair this call with Mtn Inside Zone or Mtn PA X Spot from the same set so defenders respect the run action and bite on the play fake, opening up the wheel route in space
Look to attack blitz-heavy defenses since the wheel route out of the backfield exploits vacated underneath zones when linebackers crash the line
