Defensive Reads

Read the safeties before the snap, if both are aligned deep and split wide near the numbers this is a green light for the double post concept since neither can help on both routes. Watch the middle linebacker or mike depth at the snap, a shallow drop or blitz look opens the shallow drag and flat routes for an easy checkdown before the posts even develop. Key the flat defender assigned to the TE out route, if he sinks too deep trying to help on the post the flat becomes an instant completion. This play struggles against single high looks like Cover 3 or Cover 1 where a rangy free safety can sit in the middle of the field and undercut both posts, so expect it to get shut down by user controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle third. Also watch for disguised Cover 4 rotations to Cover 1 or Cover 3 post snap, since a late safety rotation can turn the double post into a costly interception if the QB throws into a closing window.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since this concept is built to punish Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells that struggle to cover two vertical posts with one deep defender in the middle of the field. If you see two high safeties sitting deep and wide, trust the double post window and let it rip on time to the first post that clears the underneath zone. Against man coverage, hot route the underneath drag into a quicker option or check the HB release to avoid the sack since the deep posts take longer to develop against tight man coverage. Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in split safety shells to prevent the big play. Pair this play with Slants or RPO Read Bubble from the same set to keep the defense honest, since those quick game concepts punish teams that jump the deep posts, and Dagger Z Comeback works well as a complementary shot play to keep safeties from cheating to the double post side.
