Y Trips Close

SpecialistsGadgetSLWR

Overview

Y Trips Close takes the standard Singleback trips look and squeezes the bunch-adjacent alignment tight to the formation, with the tight end (the Y) joining two receivers in a compressed three-man surface and a single receiver isolated on the backside. Out of 11 personnel, you get one running back next to the quarterback and a tight end who is aligned as part of the trips cluster rather than attached to the tackle, which means the defense has to declare early whether it is treating your Y as a run-support body or a coverage assignment. Unlike wider trips sets in Singleback that stretch the field horizontally and invite quarters rotation, Y Trips Close pulls defenders into a condensed box, creating natural traffic for Mesh, Curls X-Choice, and Smash while leaving grass on the isolated backside receiver.

Strengths

  • The Gadget and SLWR tags unlock a heavy jet motion package (Jet PA Sprint Y Leak, Jet 6 Soar, Jet Wide Zone, Jet PA Slot Screen), so you can motion the slot across the formation pre-snap to instantly identify man coverage by watching whether a defender travels with him
  • Mesh out of a compressed trips surface is one of the best man beaters in the game because the condensed splits force defenders through a tighter rub point, and the sit route settles right in the vacated hook window against Cover 3
  • Smash and Curls X-Choice give you a built-in Cover 2 and Cover 4 answer on the same alignment, with the isolated backside X running a choice route you can read one-on-one after confirming no help over the top
  • The play-action family (Jet PA Sprint RT, Mtn PA Boot Rt, PA Switch WR In, Jet PA Sprint Y Leak) uses the jet fake to freeze second-level zone defenders, and the Y Leak concept punishes users who chase the sprint-out side with their user-controlled defender
  • Condensed splits collapse the defensive edge, which makes HB Stretch, Jet Wide Zone, and Mtn HB Zone Wk hit outside leverage before a wide alignment would give the corner time to fit

Weaknesses

  • The compressed trips side gives you almost no immediate sideline release, so aggressive press man with an outside-shade cloud corner can wall your entire surface and force a hold in the pocket
  • Only one running back and a detached tight end means minimal interior protection help, so A-gap nano blitzes and mug looks over the guards get home fast on the deeper play-action drops
  • Every jet play has a pre-snap motion tell, and experienced opponents will read the motion direction, then flip their coverage or bring a slot blitz from the side the motion vacates
  • The isolated backside receiver is easy to double once the defense recognizes you consistently work Curls X-Choice or Mtn X-Go Dig to that side, and a user-controlled safety cheating over the top erases the concept entirely
  • Run game is limited to one back with no lead blocker, so HB Dive and HB Pump Draw struggle against loaded boxes and stack fronts in short yardage

Usage Tips

Open with jet motion on early downs purely as a coverage indicator: if a defender mirrors the motion man across the formation, live with the man beaters (Mesh, Curls X-Choice), and if the defense stays static, go to the zone beaters (Smash, Mtn X-Go Dig)

Against single-high looks, hot route the inside trips receiver on a drag and pair it with the Smash corner to create a high low on the flat defender, which is a reliable third and medium conversion

Use WR Screen and Jet PA Slot Screen as your answer once opponents start bringing heat off the trips surface, since the compressed splits put two blockers in front of the ball carrier immediately

Sequence the run and pass off identical jet motion: run Jet Wide Zone twice, then come back with Jet PA Sprint Y Leak or Jet PA Wide Zone so the flow read pulls linebackers away from the leak window

On third and long, motion the slot to empty the trips side and slide protection toward the pressure, then work the backside choice route with your back set to block rather than releasing
