Doubles South

Overview

Doubles South is the jet motion variant of Singleback Doubles, running 11 personnel with two receivers split to each side, the tight end attached in a slot or wing alignment, and the back offset next to the quarterback. The alignment itself looks like standard Doubles, but the playbook attached to it is what separates it: PA Jet Sweep, Jet Sweep, Zone Fake Jet, and PA Y Drag Wheel all build motion into the play art, which means you get free pre-snap movement without burning a manual motion and eating the timing penalty that comes with it. That motion forces the defense to declare rotation before the ball is snapped, and against user opponents who like to disguise Cover 3 as Cover 2 or vice versa, the jet man crossing the formation is your cheat sheet.

The two by two structure keeps the field balanced, so unlike Bunch or Tight sets in Singleback, no defender can cheat inside without opening the outside third. The tight end being a slot body instead of a hand in the dirt blocker is the matchup lever here: if the defense answers 11 personnel with base and leaves a linebacker over the tight end, Rams Dig N Up and PA Dbl Cross put that linebacker in coverage depth on the dig or the crosser and he will lose. If they go nickel and drop a slot corner over him, Bench and Flanker Spot let you attack the smaller body underneath while the outside receiver clears the deep zone.

Concept variety is the real strength of the set. You get a full interior run game with HB Dive, HB Draw, and HB Zone WK, a play action package tied to the jet fake, and a complete short to intermediate passing tree with Stick, Bench, and Flanker Spot. That combination makes Doubles South a self contained script: same look, same alignment, run or pass, motion or no motion, so film study on you gets very difficult once you cycle through everything.

Strengths

  • Built in jet motion on PA Jet Sweep, Jet Sweep, Zone Fake Jet, and PA Y Drag Wheel forces coverage rotation to declare pre-snap, giving you a free read on whether you are facing single high or two deep before you snap.
  • Rams Dig N Up and PA Dbl Cross are elite zone beaters, attacking the intermediate hole between the flat defender and the deep third while the crossers pull linebackers laterally out of their drops.
  • Bench and Flanker Spot are pure man beaters that create natural rub and leverage conflict, especially when you hot route the inside receiver on a slant or drag to occupy the trailing defender.
  • Stick is your money answer against zone on third and medium, with the tight end sitting in the void and the outside receiver clearing the corner deep, and it converts to a man beater if you hot route the stick man to an out.
  • The balanced two by two alignment prevents the defense from overloading one side without exposing the opposite boundary, and the offset back gives you clean checks to run or pass without changing the look.

Weaknesses

  • The offset single back and 11 personnel mean interior pressure and nano blitzes get home fast, and HB Dive or HB Zone WK will stall against loaded A gap looks unless you slide protection or block the back.
  • Play action plays like PA Jet Sweep, PA Y Drag Wheel, and PA Dbl Cross are dead against any real blitz because the animation locks you before the read develops, so blitz heavy opponents can turn your best concepts off.
  • The jet sweep game is scoutable: once an opponent sees the motion tag, a user-controlled linebacker or safety flowing to the motion side kills both the sweep and the play action off it.
  • Rams Dig N Up and PA Dbl Cross take time to develop, so against tight man press with a user in the middle of the field the crossers get sat on and picked.
  • There is no true power run element in the set, so short yardage and goal line situations force you out of Doubles South and into a heavier formation, which tips your hand.

Usage Tips

Read the defense off the jet motion first: if the safety rotates with the motion man you are looking at single high, so hit the backside dig or crosser on Rams Dig N Up and PA Dbl Cross.

Use HB Draw specifically against defenses that show heavy pass rush or vacate the middle on second and long, and pair it with Zone Fake Jet to punish over pursuit to the motion side.

On third and five to eight, live in Stick, Bench, and Flanker Spot, and hot route the inside receiver to a drag if you diagnose man so the rub gets your primary open on leverage.

Save the actual Jet Sweep for a boundary that shows soft edge alignment or after you have run two or three play action fakes off the same motion, so the flat defender is already sitting inside.

Against blitz heavy users, get out of play action and into HB Dive, Stick, or a quick hot route slant package, and block your back or slide the line inside to keep the A gaps clean.
