Jet Sweep out of Singleback Doubles South is a perimeter run play built on pure horizontal speed. The receiver goes in motion pre-snap and takes the handoff on a sweep path to the edge, with the offensive line pulling and reaching to seal the point of attack while the playside tackle and wing block down. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing game sense, but it specifically exploits defenses that are slow to flow with motion or that stack heavy boxes without accounting for edge speed. The primary read is the edge defender or force player: if he crashes down inside, the ball carrier bounces it outside, and if he stays wide, the runner cuts up through the alley created by the pulling linemen.
Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker assignment to the motion side before the snap, if they widen out to match motion the edge is compromised for the run. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line, this can blow up the pulling linemen before they reach the point of attack. Key the safety rotation, if the safety flows hard to the motion side pre-snap it signals the defense is honoring Jet Sweep and setting up to shut down the perimeter. User the playside linebacker or slot defender to spy the motion and stay square, avoid jumping upfield or the cutback lane opens instantly. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined edge defenders are the toughest to run this against, while Cover 1 and man-heavy blitzes that clear out the edge are the most vulnerable.
Use pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing early and expose gap discipline before the snap even happens.
Check the box count before calling this play, six or fewer defenders in the box gives the sweep a numbers advantage to the edge.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or hitch if you expect a blitz, this gives you a bailout throw against overloaded fronts.
Pair Jet Sweep with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet in the same series so defenders start respecting the motion and freeze on run fits, opening up the play-action shots off identical presnap looks.
Best called on early downs or short yardage situations where defenses are playing base run fits rather than sub packages built to defend space.
