Stick Spacing is a spacing based passing concept run out of Singleback Doubles South that spreads five eligible receivers underneath to attack zone coverage with quick, high percentage throws. The concept combines stick routes from the slot with flat and spacing routes from the outside receivers, creating natural picture reads against zone drops while giving the QB a built in progression from the flat to the stick to the backside hook. This is primarily a zone beater designed to exploit soft spots in Cover 2, Cover 3, and Cover 4 shells, and the primary read progression works flat to stick to the far side spacing route, with the running back check release available as a checkdown against pressure.
Read the flat defender first since he determines whether the stick route or the flat route is open, if he sits on the flat throw the stick immediately. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops signal a hard zone that clogs the stick window while deeper drops open up the underneath spacing routes. Identify Cover 3 by looking for a single deep safety and three deep zone defenders, this shell leaves the stick and spacing combo wide open in the intermediate area. Cover 4 with sticky corners jumping the flat routes can shut this play down quickly, so be ready to reset your progression to the backside spacing route or checkdown to the running back. Watch for a user controlled defender flashing down into a lurk technique over the stick route, since aggressive players will often abandon their zone assignment to jump this exact route in Doubles South formations.
Use pre-snap motion or a alert to identify if the defense is showing a two high or one high shell before the snap, since Stick Spacing thrives against zone shells with soft underneath coverage.
If you see man coverage indicators like tight press alignment or a linebacker shaded on the slot, consider hot routing the stick route to a speed out or slant to create separation instead of forcing the read.
This play excels on third and short to third and medium situations where the stick and flat combo can consistently pick up the sticks against zone defenses that sit back to prevent big plays.
Pair Stick Spacing with HB Dive or HB Draw in your play calling sequence to keep defenses honest against the run and force linebackers to respect the box before dropping into their zone drops.
Sequence this play after PA Rollout or PA Jet Sweep so defenders that bit on run action or the initial play fake are still recovering, opening up bigger throwing windows for the spacing routes.
