PA Dbl Cross is a play-action pass out of Singleback Doubles South that sends two crossing routes from opposite sides of the field to attack linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake. The play-action mesh forces zone defenders to widen their drops or man defenders to fight through traffic, making it an effective man and zone beater against single-high shells. Your primary read progression starts with the near crosser working underneath, then works to the deep cross settling behind the intermediate zone drops, with the backside dig or corner route as the eventual layer if both crossers are covered.
Read the strong safety depth pre snap, if he is sitting shallow near the box expect him to jump the underneath crosser so plan to layer the throw over him Watch linebacker spacing at the snap, if both mikes and will bite on the play fake and collapse toward the line of scrimmage the crossers will have a wide throwing lane behind them Identify Tampa 2 or Cover 2 shells by checking for two deep safeties pre snap, since the deep crosser can get picked off by a sinking safety if you throw it late Beware user controlled linebackers sitting in a lurk spot in the middle of the field, they will jump the shallow crosser if the quarterback stares it down too long Cover 3 with a robber defender in the intermediate zone is the toughest shell for this concept since it clogs both crossing lanes, so check for a defender sitting at ten to twelve yards before committing to the throw
Sell the run fake by holding the play-action animation out and stepping into the pocket rather than immediately drifting, since defenders keying run flow will bite harder on a full commitment
Use this on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses expect Wide Zone Wk or HB Dive from this same set, since the run action tags directly into those looks
Check the middle of field pre snap, if you see a single high safety rotate to the crossers side, hot route the backside crosser into a deep dig to hold the safety honest
Against man coverage shells, motion the TE across if allowed to identify man versus zone before the snap, then trust the crossers to create natural rub separation
Pair this play in a sequence with HB Zone WK or Jet Sweep first to condition the defense to bite on outside run action, then come back with PA Dbl Cross to hit the crossers over the middle once linebackers start flowing hard to the flow side
