HB Draw out of Singleback Doubles South is a delayed run play designed to look like a dropback pass before handing off to the HB, punishing aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses. The offensive line shows pass protection at the snap before climbing to the second level, with the center and guards working combo blocks to seal the interior for the RB to find a crease. The primary read is patience: let the blocking develop, press the hole, then read the linebacker flow before cutting to the open lane, usually working from the play side A gap out to the backside B gap if the initial lane is clogged.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a blitz look with linebackers stacked close to the line or extra rushers off the edge, since HB Draw thrives against those aggressive fronts. Check safety depth: two deep safeties or a single high safety cheating late off a play fake tells you whether the defense is respecting the pass, which sets up cutback lanes if the linebackers bite on the drop. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he sprints into a pass drop or blitzes hard upfield, the draw hits big, but if he sits and reads the OL's pass set he'll fill the gap instantly. Watch for a spy or a defender staying home in the box on money downs, that assignment kills the draw before it starts. This play struggles against disciplined zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where linebackers keep their eyes on the backfield and read run-pass mesh points, and it gets stuffed by interior nano blitzes that shoot gaps immediately at the snap.
Call this on passing downs like second and long or third and medium when the defense is geared up to rush the passer, since the delayed action freezes linebackers and defensive ends. Watch for defenders showing blitz pre-snap, such as linebackers creeping to the line or a nickel corner walked up, since draw plays gash overaggressive blitz packages that vacate the interior. Avoid calling this against a defense that has shown discipline staying home on draws or against heavy zone blitz calls with spies, since those defenders will sit and read the mesh point. Pair HB Draw with PA Rollout or PA Y Drag Wheel earlier in a drive to condition the defense to react to play action, then hit them with the draw when they start jumping routes. Sequence it after Stick or Stick Spacing on early downs to bait linebackers into sitting in short zones, opening up the draw lane once they commit to pass drops. Use the left or right stick to manually one cut once you see the linebackers flow, don't dance in the backfield or you'll get swallowed by backside pursuit.
