HB Dive out of Singleback Doubles South is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the A gap fast, using inline zone blocking from the center and guards with the fullback spot vacated since this is an 11 personnel look. The offensive line steps together to seal the interior gaps while the HB reads the mesh point between the guards and center for the crease. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read progression is simple: the HB presses the line, keys the first wave of blockers, and picks between the A gaps based on which side the defensive tackles and mike linebacker get displaced.
Watch the mike linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow at five yards or closer he can fill the A gap instantly and blow up the dive before it develops Look for stacked fronts with both defensive tackles playing zero technique, this clogs both A gaps and forces the HB to bounce outside where blockers are not built for it User-controlled defenders flying downhill on first contact are the biggest threat to this play, so respect any user blitzer showing early aggression at the snap Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers reading run first are the toughest matchup, since they close gaps quickly and rally to the ball before the HB can accelerate Nickel and dime packages with lighter boxes are where this play thrives, since fewer bodies inside means the offensive line can win one-on-one blocks and create a clean lane
Call this on early downs like first and ten or short yardage third downs where defenses expect a stretch of the field concept instead of a quick interior run
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box this play has a clean numbers advantage for the run game
Use it against defenses that show two high safety shells since that usually means one less run defender in the box, which opens up the A gap immediately
Pair HB Dive with HB Draw and HB Zone WK in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing between a quick hitter and delayed run looks, forcing hesitation in their run fits
If the defense starts crashing down hard after a few dive runs, counter with PA Jet Sweep or Zone Fake Jet from the same formation to punish overaggressive linebacker flow
