HB Dive out of Singleback Doubles South is a pure downhill run play designed to attack the interior gaps with a straightforward one back run blocking scheme. The offensive line fires out with base blocks to create a vertical crease between the guards and tackles while the fullback less personnel keeps the box light. This is not a man or zone beater in the traditional passing sense since it is a run play, but it exploits light boxes and overaggressive linebackers who bite on outside flow or play action fakes elsewhere in the set. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial gap, read the play side guard block, and cut off the first color you see rather than bouncing outside prematurely.
Pre-snap, identify the number of defenders in the box, six or fewer favors the offense while seven or eight signals a run blitz or run commit call that should shut this down Check linebacker depth and alignment, linebackers sitting shallow and stacked over the guards are keying run and will fill gaps fast, forcing you to consider a cutback Watch for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, a single high safety who creeps down late often signals a run blitz disguised as a standard shell Post-snap, identify whether the defensive line is slanting toward the play side gap, a hard slant away from the called gap opens a natural cutback lane User controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill can be baited into overcommitting, use this to set up cutback runs or complementary play action shots later in the series
Call HB Dive when you diagnose a light box of six or fewer defenders before the snap, since extra defenders in the box make this a low value run
Use HB Dive early in a series to set up PA Rollout or Zone Fake Jet later since defenders who bite on inside run fits become vulnerable to play action shots off the same formation
Avoid calling this into known run blitz packages or when the defense shows a heavy mug look at the line, since the interior gaps get clogged immediately
Mix HB Dive with HB Draw and Wide Zone Wk to keep linebackers guessing on run direction while still using the same personnel and formation shell
On third and short or goal line situations, HB Dive is a strong conversion tool because it hits fast and does not require the ball carrier to make many reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expect a quick fill so be ready to bounce the run with the right stick if you get user control
