PA Rollout out of Singleback Doubles South is a play-action pass that pulls the QB out of the pocket on a rollout to one side, buying extra time against pass rush while simplifying the launch point. The play action fake tries to hold the linebackers for a beat, and the route concept typically gives the QB a rollout flood look with a flat option, an intermediate out or comeback, and a deep route stretching the sideline vertically. Primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he sits, hit the underneath route quickly, if he widens with the flat, work up to the intermediate breaking route, and only go to the deep shot route if the corner bites hard on the play fake or gets beat over the top.
Check for man coverage indicators like corners aligned tight and turned, this play beats man because the rollout forces defenders to run with receivers away from their help. Watch the flat defender post snap, if he stays home on the run fake you have a natural window underneath, if he sucks up on the fake the comeback or out route opens. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells before the snap, rollout flood concepts stress the deep third or deep quarter defender responsible for the sideline, look for him to be late getting depth. Beware of contain blitzes or edge pressure from the rollout side, defenses that send a corner or safety off that edge can collapse the pocket before routes develop. Look for zone defenders sinking into deep coverage on the play fake, this play loses value against disciplined zone teams that do not bite on the run action and keep numbers to the flood side.
Run this on early downs or second and short so the play fake actually threatens the defense and linebackers respect the run action.
Check the flat defender before the snap, if you see a linebacker or safety walked down near the box edge, expect him to sit on the flat route so plan to work the intermediate breaker.
Use the rollout to buy time against user blitzers, if your QB is mobile you can throw on the run or tuck it for extra yards once you clear the pocket.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick drag or slant if the defense shows heavy coverage rolled to the rollout side, giving you a built in answer against zone rotation.
