Ace Overload is the run-first, misdirection-heavy corner of the Singleback formation family. Where most Singleback sets in 11 personnel spread the field with a slot receiver and a detached tight end, Ace Overload stacks strength to one side: the tight end aligns inline with a receiver overloading the same edge, leaving a single isolated X receiver on the weak side. That alignment tilt is the whole point. It creates a plus-one run surface to the overload side and forces the defense to either shift the front and safety rotation toward the numbers advantage or accept a leverage disadvantage in the run game.
The playbook here reflects that identity. Nine plays, all of them either downhill runs or play action off those runs. 0 1 Trap, HB Stretch, HB Smash, and HB Belly Weak give you gap, zone, and counter-action out of the same look, while HB Misdirection punishes aggressive user-controlled linebackers who flow hard to the overload side. The play action package (PA Belly Shot, PA LT Sneak, PA Misdirection, PA TE Seam) is where the set generates explosive plays, because the same overload alignment that sells run also releases the tight end into the vacated middle third and puts the isolated X on an island against whatever coverage the defense leaves over there.
The matchup math is straightforward. If the defense overshifts to the overload side to handle the run threat, your X receiver is in single high man or Cover 3 with no help, and a streak or slot hot route gets you a one on one every snap. If the defense stays balanced and plays base coverage, you run it at the numbers advantage. Against user-controlled safeties who cheat to the strength, PA TE Seam splits the seam behind them for chunk yardage.
Establish the run first with 0 1 Trap and HB Stretch on early downs, then run PA Belly Shot and PA Misdirection off that exact same read to punish linebackers who start flowing on the snap
Read the safety rotation pre snap: if the free safety shades toward the overload side, hot route the isolated X to a streak or fade and take the one on one shot
Against single high man, PA TE Seam is your best chunk play because the tight end releases from an inline alignment and the middle third is already leaning strong
Use HB Misdirection and HB Belly Weak when you see the defensive line slanting strong or the user linebacker cheating to the overload side, since both plays attack the vacated weak side
Motion the overload receiver across the formation to diagnose man versus zone, then check into the appropriate run or play action call before the snap
Save PA LT Sneak for short yardage and goal line situations where the defense is crashing hard on the run action
