HB Misdirection from Singleback Ace Overload shows the HB aligned offset behind the QB, taking a counter step before receiving the handoff and cutting back against the flow of the offensive line. The diagram shows the full line blocking down as one unit while the backfield action pulls defensive flow one way before the HB presses back opposite the line's initial movement. This is a base run play built to exploit downhill, over aggressive linebackers and edge defenders who bite on the misdirection step, so the primary read is the backside cutback lane once the second level defenders commit to their run fit.
Defensive Reads
Read the linebacker depth pre-snap. Stacked or blitzing linebackers will overrun the misdirection action and open the cutback lane. Identify if the defense is running scrape exchange technique, where the defensive end stays home on the counter step and a linebacker scrapes over the top to fill the cutback. Watch for a backside contain defender staying disciplined instead of crashing down the line, since that defender is the key to shutting this run down. Against zone blitz or defensive fronts with a spy linebacker, this play loses effectiveness because the spy negates the backside cutback lane. Check safety rotation post-snap. If a safety triggers downhill quickly on run flow, the misdirection cutback lane will not have room to develop.
Usage Tips
Use this play against defenses that show run blitz or heavy box counts of seven or eight defenders since misdirection specifically punishes fast flowing linebackers.
Watch the Mike linebacker pre-snap. If he is walked up tight to the line and flowing hard on run reads post-snap, this play will consistently gash the backside.
Pair this with HB Stretch and HB Smash earlier in a drive so the defense keys outside zone flow, then dial up HB Misdirection to counter their over pursuit.
Avoid calling this on obvious passing downs since the backfield action telegraphs run immediately to a disciplined defense reading keys.
User the backside linebacker or defensive end presnap if you expect a spy or scrape exchange, since a disciplined backside defender is the only real counter to this design.
