PA Misdirection is a play-action deep shot off a run fake designed to sell HB Misdirection or HB Belly Weak before pushing the ball vertically. Off the play-action mesh, the deep red route runs a corner-post breaking away from the fake side, the yellow route runs a deep out breaking toward the sideline at a similar depth, and the blue route works an underneath drag or flat crossing route that gives a quick outlet against pressure. The primary read progression starts with the deep red post read against single-high shells, moves to the yellow deep out if the safety rotates over the top, and checks down to the blue underneath crosser as the final option versus a blitz or tight coverage.
Pre-snap, identify single-high versus two-high safety alignment since this play is built to punish single-high looks with the red post over the top. Watch linebacker depth and run fits, if they are stacked tight to the line expecting another misdirection run, the play-action fake will hold them and open throwing lanes. Post-snap, track any user-controlled safety sprinting to the deep middle, that lurk threat can undercut the red post and force the check to the yellow out or blue drag. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, the yellow deep out sits in the void between the corner and flat defender, so read the corner's depth to see if that window is open. This play is neutral to negative versus disciplined defenses that stay home on play-action and get depth in their drops, since the underneath blue route becomes the only live option once the deep windows close.
Run this on early downs, 1st or 2nd and medium, when the defense has shown run support or crashed hard on your HB Misdirection tendencies. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, hot route the yellow out to a comeback or curl to shorten the window against zone drops. Pair this play in sequence right after HB Misdirection or HB Belly Weak so the run fake carries real weight and linebackers bite on the play-action mesh point. Against man coverage, key the red post first since it stresses a single-high safety over the top, and against zone shells, work the blue underneath crosser as a rhythm throw versus soft zone drops. Use max protect or a chip block audible on the blue route runner if you are facing a heavy blitz look to buy the extra half second needed for the deep routes to develop.
