PA TE Seam out of Singleback Ace Overload uses play-action to freeze linebackers before sending the TE up the seam on a vertical stem while both outside receivers clear the top of the defense on go routes. The backside X and flanker run straight fades to hold the corners and safeties deep, opening the intermediate seam window for the tight end against zone drops. The primary read is the TE seam route first, working to the deep outside shots if the seam is capped by a linebacker sinking into the middle hole.
Defensive Reads
Watch the Mike and Sam linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting run the seam route will have a clean lane once the play fake sucks them forward. Post-snap, key the deep safeties, if both safeties bail immediately without respecting the fake this indicates zone coverage and the seam sits in the soft spot between hook defenders. Identify user-controlled defenders spying the middle of the field, a user lurking in the seam window is the biggest threat to this concept and forces a checkdown or outside shot read. Against Cover 4 or quarters shells, the TE seam gets carried by a safety, so be ready to work through progression to the outside go routes instead of forcing the seam. Watch for slot or nickel blitzes off the edge since the play design does not show extra protection help, a hot route or quick TE seam release can beat blitz timing before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Sell the play fake with a stick and pause instead of instant one-button PA to keep second-level defenders honest against run-heavy tendencies.
Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and medium when defenses are more likely to bite on the fake and play a two-high or single-high run fit.
Pre-snap, check for Mike linebacker depth and if he is stacked tight to the box the seam window will be much larger once the fake holds him.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 1, prioritize the TE seam immediately since it splits the hook and flat zones or wins on the vertical stem versus man leverage.
Pair this play with HB Stretch or HB Belly Weak earlier in a series so the run action tendency sets up the play-action fake and makes linebackers step up harder.
