HB Stretch out of Singleback Ace Overload is an outside zone run play that sends the entire offensive line flowing laterally toward the point of attack before climbing to their zone landmarks. The diagram shows the HB taking a wide angle path toward the edge, reading the stretch of the frontside blocks and picking his crease off the flow of the linemen rather than a designated hole. This is a pure run play with no route combos attached, and the primary read progression is bounce, bang, or bend based on how the defensive front flows to the football.
Defensive Reads
Check the linebacker depth and alignment pre-snap, since stacked or crashing linebackers signal a hard flow defense that is vulnerable to a cutback lane. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 front, since wider techniques from the defensive ends can clog the stretch lane and force an early bounce read. Watch the user-controlled defender at linebacker or safety, since a good stretch defense will have a spill technique from the edge and fast pursuit from the second level. Look for run blitzes or gap exchange calls that show a defensive lineman crashing inside while a linebacker fills outside, which can blow up the frontside zone track. If the defense shows heavy zone drops with light boxes (nickel or dime personnel), the stretch should have a clean lane to the edge before the safety can rotate down.
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since HB Stretch loses value against stacked fronts that can outnumber the zone flow.
Use your fullback or TE lead blocker (if hot routed to seal) to control the edge defender, then let the HB press the line before deciding to bounce outside or cut back against overpursuit.
Pair this with HB Belly Weak and HB Misdirection from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the stretch flow, forcing them to respect counter action off similar formation looks.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime sub packages.
Watch for user linebackers flowing hard to the play side pre-snap, since a quick cutback read punishes overaggressive flow to the sideline.
