Bunch X Nasty

Overview

Bunch X Nasty is one of the most versatile 11 personnel sets in the Singleback formation. It pairs a compressed three receiver bunch with the Y tight end aligned in a nasty split, detached a couple of yards outside the tackle on the opposite side. Standard Singleback sets keep the TE tight or spread the receivers into 2x2 looks. This set instead stacks your wideouts into a tight cluster and gives the TE a wider launch point, so he can release cleanly into the flat or seam and still be close enough to crack or down block on the run game. The result is a formation that looks like a run heavy set pre-snap while hiding a real flood and leak passing package.

The bunch creates natural rubs and stacked releases that punish press man and force defenses to declare how they will handle three receivers in a small area: banjo, zone matchup, or straight man. The nasty Y adds a fourth threat that linebackers and safeties must account for. Concepts like Flat Y Leak and Flat Y Seam are built around this. Mtn X Whip and Mtn Z Whip use motion to reset leverage and isolate a slot receiver on a linebacker or nickel. That makes it a strong home for SLWR tagged slot players and a Gadget piece who can win on whips, jet sweeps, and cheat screens.

On the ground, the set carries a full menu: inside zone, wide zone, split zone, counter, slam, dive, slash, crack toss, and multiple jet sweep variations. That depth lets a Power HB hammer the interior while a 3DRB handles the leak, slide, and HB flat looks out of play action. The deep PA tree includes Boot, Boot Slide, Deep Cross Go, Post Curl Shot, Boot Corner Post, and Cheat Wheel Post, so every run look has a matching shot play. This is a true constraint based set where each run shares play art and a pre-snap picture with a pass off the same action.

Strengths

  • The bunch alignment creates built-in rubs and stacked releases, so Mtn X Whip, Mtn Z Whip, and Spacing are elite man beaters that free the point or slot receiver against Cover 1 and Cover 0
  • Flat Y Leak and Mtn Flat Y Leak flood one side with a flat, corner, and delayed TE leak, overloading Cover 3 and Cover 4 flat defenders and giving a clean high to low read
  • The nasty split TE releases free off the line, so Flat Y Seam and PA Deep Cross Go stress Cover 2 and single high safeties by putting a TE vertical up the hash that linebackers struggle to carry
  • The run game has elite depth with inside zone, wide zone, split zone, counter, slam, and crack toss, all mirrored by PA Boot, PA Counter, and PA Counter HB Leak, which punishes defenders who bite on run keys
  • Cheat motion and jet motion plays (Zone Fake Jet Wk, PA Jet Sweep, PA WR Cheat Screen) manipulate defensive leverage pre-snap and let Gadget and SLWR tagged players attack the perimeter with numbers

Weaknesses

  • With only five linemen plus a detached TE, protection is thin against edge pressure, and nano blitzes off the side away from the nasty Y can hit the QB before deep PA concepts develop
  • The compressed bunch is easy to bracket, and a smart opponent running a banjo or matchup zone with a user-controlled safety sitting over the cluster can take away whips and spacing concepts
  • Many of the best shots come off play action and boots, so a defense that stays in two high shells and refuses to bite on run action forces you into long developing reads
  • The nasty Y is a key blocker on crack toss and counter looks, so a defense that aligns a wide 9 or overhangs the TE side can clog perimeter runs and create negative plays
  • The formation has clear run and pass tendencies tied to the TE side, and opponents who flip coverage or shade strength toward the nasty Y can eliminate your favorite leak and seam reads

Usage Tips

Read the defense pre-snap by motioning a bunch receiver: if a defender follows across, you have man coverage and should check to Mtn X Whip or Spacing; if the defense only bumps, attack zone with Flat Y Leak

Establish HB Zone Wk, Inside Zone Split, and Counter Y early with your Power HB, then call PA Boot Slide and PA Counter HB Leak off the identical action once linebackers start crashing downhill

On 3rd and short, use HB Slam or Mtn HB Dive to hit the A gap, or hot route the nasty Y to a flat or slant from a run look to beat heavy run blitzes in short yardage

Against Cover 3, call PA Post Curl Shot or PA Cheat Deep Corner and read the deep third safety. Against single high man, audible to PA Deep Cross Go and throw the crosser away from the user-controlled defender

When your opponent shows heavy pressure, slide protection toward the blitz side and hot route your 3DRB to a quick flat or block, or check to PA WR Cheat Screen to punish the vacated second level
