Mtn HB Dive is a designed downhill run out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty that uses pre-snap motion to shift the bunch look before the snap. The offensive line blocks a standard dive scheme, with the interior linemen climbing to the second level while the HB takes the handoff and reads the initial hole for a north-south cutback lane. This is a pure run play, not a screen or play-action, and the primary read is the frontside gap versus the backside cutback based on how the linebackers flow with the motion.
Watch how the linebackers react to the pre-snap motion, if they widen out to cover the receiver in man coverage it opens the interior running lane immediately. Key the defensive tackle alignment before the snap, a shaded nose or 3-technique can clog the primary dive gap and force a longer developing cutback. This run is vulnerable to a stacked front with a spy linebacker who stays home and reads the mesh point instead of flowing with motion. Look for user-controlled defenders crashing down hard on the dive, which signals aggressive gap shooting and sets up a cutback or later a play-action counter from this same formation. Against zone-heavy fronts, safeties rotating late post-snap can still fill the alley, so track deep safety depth pre-snap to judge whether the box is truly light or just disguised.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running with the receiver, which reveals man coverage and often pulls a linebacker or safety out of the box, opening the dive lane.
Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are still respecting the pass-heavy Bunch X Nasty personnel and have not sold out to stop the run.
If the defense shows a stacked box pre-snap with linebackers sitting tight to the line, consider hot routing the HB dive away from the strength or checking to a different play in the set like HB Zone Wk or Inside Zone Split.
Mix this play with Mtn Flat Y Leak and Mtn Flat Y Seam from the same set so the motion look is consistent, forcing the defense to guess run or pass off identical pre-snap movement.
Trust the initial dive read for one hard count, then bounce to the cutback lane if you see the defensive tackle get sealed and the linebacker over pursue with the flow.
