PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Bunch X Nasty fakes the jet sweep motion to the perimeter and pulls the offensive line into run-blocking action while the QB rolls back off the fake to throw. Off the play fake, the backside TE runs a deep vertical corner route while the bunch releases with an out breaking route to the boundary and a shallow drag crossing underneath, and the frontside slot runs a flat route toward the sideline as a checkdown against blitz pressure. This is a play-action shot play designed to beat aggressive run defense and man coverage that bites on the jet motion, with the primary read progression going vertical to the corner route first, then working down to the drag crossing route, and finally the flat as the checkdown outlet.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers and safeties crashing down on jet sweep motion pre-snap, that aggressive flow is exactly what this play is designed to exploit. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets gashed by the corner route, so identify press man or Cover 1 shells before the snap and expect the vertical shot to hit. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with a deep safety sitting in the throwing lane to the corner route will force you to check down to the drag or flat quickly. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level defenders, if linebackers bite on the run fake and vacate the middle, the drag route sits in soft grass for an easy completion. Disciplined defenses that spy the QB and keep outside linebackers home against jet sweep action can blow up the fake and force an early, low value checkdown throw.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion with the jet sweep man to bait linebackers and safeties into flowing hard toward the sweep side before the fake happens.
Call this on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are keying run to maximize the impact of the play-action freeze.
If you see two deep safeties or Cover 2 shells, prioritize the drag route underneath since the corner route will be capped by the deep safety rotating over.
Hot route the flat route into a deeper out or corner route against teams that sit their linebackers in short zones to take away the easy checkdown.
