Overview

Start with the honest version: Bears Offense and its sibling cut NFL Live Bears Offense are functionally the same book. They share all 599 of this playbook's plays and differ by zero sets, so there is no hidden formation or bonus package waiting on the other side. Pick whichever one your audible menu organizes more cleanly and move on, because the strategic conversation is entirely about what these 599 plays across 8 formations and 44 sets actually give you.

What they give you is a Shotgun-first spread book with a real single-back run game attached. Shotgun accounts for 381 plays (64%) spread over 24 sets, which is the widest spread of sets in the playbook by a mile and the reason this book plays like a modern 11 and 10 personnel attack. Singleback adds 134 plays (22%) across 11 sets, giving you tighter formations and heavier looks without ever putting a lead blocker in the backfield. Everything else is a sliver: I Form at 24 plays (4%) over 2 sets, Pistol at 24 plays (4%) over 2 sets, and then the single-set leftovers in Goal Line Offense (12), Strong I (12), and Weak I (9), plus 3 Hail Mary plays across 2 sets for end-of-half desperation. At 599 plays it is larger than 51% of the game's 64 offensive team playbooks, so the volume is there, it is just concentrated.

The game plan this supports is pass-concept driven with run threats layered off the same looks. The concept list runs through Pass Play, Play Action, Spot, Flat, Cover 3 Beater, Motion, and then a run menu of Power, Power Run, Counter, Toss, Dive, and Run Play. Sample plays like DBL Outs, Bench, 22 Fade Stops, Curls, and 0 1 Trap tell you the identity: horizontal stretch and stop route spacing from Shotgun, with gap scheme runs and trap action to punish defenses that widen out. Personnel groupings from 10 all the way to 23 exist, but the 23 and 13 packages live in the tiny heavy formations, so your realistic base is 11 and 12 with occasional 21 out of the I Form sets.

Scheme Fit

This book wants a quarterback comfortable working from Shotgun with quick progressions and enough accuracy on stop routes to make Bench, Curls, and 22 Fade Stops profitable, plus enough mobility to escape when Shotgun play-action stalls. You need at least two receivers who win at the catch point on spacing concepts, a back with real receiving and vision for Counter and Toss out of Singleback, and a tight end who can both chip and release, since 12 personnel is your most common heavy grouping. Pick the Bears Offense playbook if you are a spread passer who wants 24 Shotgun sets to disguise from and accepts a thin under-center run game; avoid it if your identity is lead-blocked power football or Pistol option football.

Strengths

  • Shotgun at 381 plays across 24 sets means you can fill every audible slot with a different Shotgun set and still have options left over, so opponents cannot memorize your five looks the way they can against a book with a narrow formation base.
  • The Spot, Flat, Bench, DBL Outs, Curls, and 22 Fade Stops family gives you stacked man beaters and zone beaters out of the same Shotgun alignments, so a single pre-snap read plus a streak or in hot route on the backside covers both coverage families without changing formation.
  • Cover 3 Beater as a listed concept plus the volume of Shotgun sets means you have dedicated answers to the most common user zone shell rather than having to hot route your way out of it every snap.
  • Singleback at 134 plays across 11 sets lets you run Power, Counter, Toss, and Dive from formations that do not announce run with a fullback, and formation subs inside those sets let you swap a receiving back or an extra tight end without leaving the family.
  • Motion is a listed concept here, so you have built-in shift and motion answers to diagnose man versus zone pre-snap out of your most-used Shotgun sets instead of guessing.

Weaknesses

  • Two thirds of the book living in Shotgun means a competent opponent can sit in nickel or dime all game and never get punished by personnel, because you almost never force a heavy defensive substitution.
  • The under-center run game is skeletal: I Form, Strong I, and Weak I combine for 45 plays across 4 sets total, so true lead-blocking power football and clock-killing four minute drives are a weak spot.
  • Pistol is only 24 plays across 2 sets, so you cannot build a real Pistol identity with disguised run-pass looks the way a Pistol-heavy book can, and opponents will not respect the formation when it appears.
  • Goal Line Offense is a single set with 12 plays, which makes short yardage and red zone inside the five predictable, especially with only FB Dive style interior pounding available.
  • Play Action out of Shotgun is less convincing than under-center play-action, and since Shotgun is your base, defenders who user-blitz off the edge get home before the rollout develops.

Usage Tips

Build your audible package almost entirely out of Shotgun sets, using the 24 available sets to pair one spacing concept (Bench, Curls, 22 Fade Stops), one vertical, one Cover 3 Beater, and one gap run like Power or Counter inside the same formation family so you can motion and shift without tipping.

On second and medium and third and medium, live in the Spot and Flat concepts from Shotgun and hot route the backside receiver to a drag when you read man, since the volume of sets lets you show the same look repeatedly with different route distributions.

Use Singleback as your run-heavy change of pace rather than the I Form, because 134 plays across 11 sets gives Power Run, Counter, Toss, and 0 1 Trap style trap action without dropping into the thin 4-set under-center group.

Save I Form, Strong I, and Weak I for first and second down inside your own territory and four minute situations only, since 45 total plays across 4 sets is not enough to survive a full game of scouting.

Keep Goal Line Offense off your main audible menu and call it manually inside the two yard line, and treat the 3 Hail Mary plays across 2 sets as pure end-of-half tools rather than anything you practice.
