SFT PA Double Cross is a play-action pass out of I Form Y Off Close (21 personnel) that sends both outside receivers on deep crossing routes in opposite directions, creating a double cross concept that stresses the middle of the field. The play-action fake to the HB holds the linebackers, while the near-side TE/HB checks down into a shallow flat or drag route underneath as an outlet. This is primarily a man beater since the crossing routes generate natural rub and separation against man coverage, though it can also stretch zone defenders who overcommit to the run fake, with the primary read progression going deep crosser first (the one breaking away from the play-action rollout side) then working down to the underneath check release.
Read the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are shallow or crashing toward the box expect single high or run support looks that this play can exploit over the top. Watch for man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight to the line or shading inside, since the crossing routes create natural picks that beat man to man leverage. Post-snap, key the linebackers immediately after the play-action fake, if they bite hard on the run fake the middle of the field opens up for the deep crossers. Identify any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, this is the primary threat to the underneath check release and can jump the crossing routes if not accounted for. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebacker drops can shut this down since the deep crossers run directly into zone defenders who stay in their landmarks instead of biting on the fake.
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since the double cross concept thrives against man coverage with its natural traffic and rub routes.
Sell the play-action fake fully by letting the animation play out, this holds linebackers and safeties just long enough for the deep crossers to clear the second level.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and medium) when defenses are more likely to respect the run and bite on the play-action fake out of I Form personnel.
If you see press man on the outside receivers, hot route the underneath TE to a quick out to give yourself a faster outlet against blitz looks.
Pair this play with HB Iso or HB Zone Toss earlier in a series to sell the run tendency out of this personnel group, then dial up SFT PA Double Cross once the defense starts crashing downhill on run fakes.
