Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of I Form Y Off Close with 21 personnel, giving you a fullback and inline TE for extra blocking surface. The diagram shows the HB taking a weak side track behind the line with the fullback leading through the hole, while the offensive line flows in unison to the play side to seal running lanes. This is a zone run play designed to let the HB read blocks and pick his gap rather than a predetermined hole, so the primary read progression is backside cutback lane first, then bend it to the play side crease if backside linebackers flow too fast.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side defensive end and 3 technique first, if they crash hard down the line the cutback lane opens up immediately. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, stacked or blitzing linebackers can beat zone blocking with quick gap fills so be ready to check to a pass if you see a nano blitz look. Look for safety rotation into the box, an eight man front pre-snap is the clearest sign to abandon this run and check to a play-action or RPO concept instead. Post-snap, track the backside linebacker flow, if he flows hard with the zone action the cutback becomes the higher value lane over the play side crease. This run struggles against gap exchange stunts and cross blitzes from the defensive line, so if you see a lot of pre-snap line movement or twist packages, consider an audible.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against your play-action shots later in the set.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 21 personnel, consider bailing to a play-action concept like PA Deep Read instead.
Use the fullback as your lead blocker cue, if the FB gets immediate penetration on the play side, bounce the HB backside for the cutback.
Pair this with HB Counter Wk and Mtn Counter Solid in your play calling sequence so linebackers cannot sit on zone flow tendencies and get gashed by counter action off the same personnel look.
Against aggressive gap shooting defenses, mix in HB Iso from this set to punish overpursuit with a downhill blocker isolating a linebacker.
