SFT Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out concept run from the I Form Y Off Close set with 21 personnel. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the TE releases vertically and breaks outside on a deep out, stacking two long developing routes on the same side to stress a rolled up safety. The HB checks out of the backfield into a flat route underneath as the immediate outlet, while the backside X runs a shallow drag across the field for a crossing option away from the run fake. Primary read progression starts with the HB flat as the sprint out quarterback rolls, then climbs to the TE breaking route intermediate, and finally to the deep corner if the safety bites on the play fake, making this a strong man beater against aggressive underneath coverage and off man looks.
Man coverage with press corners is vulnerable here because the sprint out gives the quarterback easy access to the HB flat and forces defenders to run stride for stride on the TE and X routes. Cover 3 and other single high shells can be exposed if the corner route stresses the flat to deep quarter defender, watch for the corner sinking too fast which opens the window underneath. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap the deep corner route becomes tougher to complete, prioritize the HB flat and TE breaking route instead. Post-snap key the flat defender and any user controlled linebacker spying the sprint out lane, a hard squeeze toward the flat opens the TE breaking route behind it. Heavy blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play if the sprint out protection cannot hold up, get the ball out quickly to the HB flat as your answer against pressure.
Use this out of the I Form Y Off Close set on early downs when the defense has shown run blitz tendencies off the play action fake to get free access underneath. Check the safety depth before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the boundary the deep corner route has a favorable window on the roll. Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crosser if you are facing zone heavy shells since the sprint out naturally clears the QB away from underneath zone defenders. Sequence this play with Mtn Flood or SFT Mtn PA Flood earlier in the drive so the defense respects the flood concept, then hit this sprint out HB flat as a change up to attack overplayed flood reads. Best called on second and medium or third and short where the HB flat and TE breaking route give a quick answer against blitz pressure.
