Overview

Chargers Offense and NFL Live Chargers Offense are functionally the same playbook. The sibling cut shares all 596 of this book's 596 plays and differs by zero sets, so whichever one you load, your audibles, formation subs and practice reps carry over one to one. Pick based on which menu you prefer, not on content.

The Chargers Offense is a Shotgun first playbook. Shotgun accounts for 355 plays (60%) spread across 24 sets, which means most of your down to down calling lives in spread and empty adjacent looks built around 11 personnel. Behind that sits a meaningful under center and offset menu: Singleback (96 plays, 16%, 7 sets), I Form (60 plays, 10%, 4 sets) and Pistol (54 plays, 9%, 4 sets). The concept tags point to a quick game and intermediate passing identity: Slant, Hitch, Spot, Flat, Drag and Crosser combos, a dedicated Cover 3 Beater tag, Post shots, and Block and Release routes that let backs and tight ends chip before leaking into the flat.

What separates this 596 play book from a generic Shotgun sheet is its short yardage depth. It carries 23 and 32 personnel packages, a Goal Line Offense menu (13 plays), a Weak I set, and Split T, a formation found in only 7 of the game's 236 playbooks. That supports a game plan of spreading defenses thin with Shotgun quick game and play action, then compressing into heavy personnel with runs like FB Dive and 0 1 Trap when you need a yard or are working the red zone.

Scheme Fit

The Chargers Offense playbook wants an accurate, quick release quarterback who can win in Shotgun rhythm throws, supported by route running receivers on Slant, Drag and Crosser concepts and a receiving back who can execute Block and Release assignments. It also rewards having a fullback and at least two blocking tight ends so the 23, 32 and Split T packages can finish drives. Pick it if you are a spread passing player who still wants a legitimate heavy personnel short yardage menu without switching books.

Strengths

  • Shotgun depth at 24 sets and 355 plays lets you run the same Slant, Hitch, Spot and Flat concepts out of many alignments, so opponents struggle to key on formation tendencies while your quick game stays consistent.
  • Split T is available in only 7 of 236 playbooks, giving you a rare two back short yardage look that most opponents have never had to defend or practice against.
  • Heavy personnel coverage (23, 32, 22 and 13) plus a Goal Line Offense menu means you can sub into true jumbo packages near the goal line without switching playbooks or relying on awkward formation subs.
  • Play Action and Block and Release tags across Singleback, I Form and Pistol let you sell run from under center or pistol, chip an edge rusher with the back or tight end, then release into the flat as a checkdown against blitzes.
  • A dedicated Cover 3 Beater concept alongside Post, Drag and Crosser routes gives you built in answers to single high zone without needing to hot route every snap.

Weaknesses

  • With 60% of plays in Shotgun, an opponent who sees gun can sit on pass and play lighter boxes, and your Shotgun run game has to prove itself early to punish that.
  • The playbook is only larger than 41% of offensive team books, so beyond Shotgun your sets are thin: Pistol and I Form each have just 4 sets, which limits formation variety once you leave the gun.
  • Split T and Weak I offer only 9 and 6 plays respectively, so a sharp opponent who sees those formations can narrow down your call quickly and sell out on the run.
  • Goal Line Offense has just 13 plays across 2 sets, making the heavy red zone menu predictable if you lean on it repeatedly in the same game.
  • The concept list skews toward quick and intermediate routes; vertical shot plays are limited mostly to Post tags, so defenses that squeeze underneath and play Cover 2 shells can shrink your throwing windows.

Usage Tips

Build your base audible package around Shotgun sets, keeping one Slant or Hitch quick game call, one Drag or Crosser man beater, one Cover 3 Beater and one play action look so you can check out of any coverage on first and second down.

On 2nd and medium, audible to Singleback play action with Block and Release routes; the tight end or back chip helps protection against nano blitz pressure while leaving a flat checkdown.

On 3rd and 1 or 4th and short, go to Split T or I Form and run a downhill call like FB Dive, and use motion pre snap to shift the defense before the snap.

Inside the 5, alternate between Goal Line Offense runs such as 0 1 Trap and a Play Action Flat throw so the opponent cannot commit an extra user defender to the A gap.

Use Pistol on early downs when you want run pass balance out of one look, then hot route the outside receiver to a Slant against press man to punish loaded boxes.
