Breakdown

Counter F out of Weak I Z Close is a power run play that pulls the backside guard and fullback to lead through the hole on a counter step, with the HB taking a hesitation step away from the play side before pressing back downhill through the mash of the line. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down and the pulling linemen wrapping to create a lane just off the tackle, while the FB and HB counter action forces the defense to flow the wrong way. This is a straight run play with no route concept or play-action tag attached, so your primary read is the pulling blockers, letting them clear the alley before deciding whether to cut inside their kick or bounce it outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for user-controlled linebackers crashing hard to the play side flow, since that is exactly the mistake Counter F is designed to exploit with the misdirection. If the defense is in a stacked box with linebackers reading counter steps and staying square, they can beat the pullers to the point of attack and blow up the play in the backfield. Check for a fast flowing edge defender or a scraping DE, since a disciplined backside contain player can chase down the counter before the fullback gets a clean kickout block. Man coverage on the perimeter does not matter much here since there are no routes to defend, so your defensive keys should be entirely on linebacker gap discipline and defensive line penetration. Against a defense that consistently shoots gaps with a fast interior blitz, the counter timing gets exposed, so look for another gap run or a quick pass out of this set instead.

Usage Tips

Use Counter F on early downs when you have a numbers advantage in the box, ideally with six or fewer defenders showing pre-snap. Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting tight to the line expecting a quick hitter, the counter action will freeze them and open the cutback lane. Pair this with FB Power earlier in a series so the defense keys hard on downhill power runs, then hit them with Counter F to punish overaggressive linebacker flow. Avoid calling this against a heavy blitz look up the middle since the counter timing needs a beat to develop and can get blown up before the pullers get set. On third and short, this play works well because linebackers are often keying run anyway, so the counter misdirection still has a chance to freeze them just enough to spring the cutback.
