Z Curl is a play-action-free dropback pass out of Weak I with 21 personnel that attacks the middle and edges of the field with a five man route combo. The Z receiver runs a deep curl to the boundary, the flanker on the other side runs a vertical seam up the numbers, the TE sits down on a short curl/hook in the underneath middle, and the HB releases outside on a flat route to the sideline while the FB checks and releases to the opposite flat. This is a zone beater at its core, using the curl and flat combination to stretch underneath zone defenders vertically while the seam route occupies the deep half safety, with the primary read going seam first if the safety bites on the curl, then working down to the curl or flat based on the linebacker drop.
Key the middle linebacker and weak side linebacker depth at the snap since they determine whether the TE curl or HB flat will be open in the shallow to intermediate window. Watch the free safety pre-snap alignment; if he is shaded to the seam side pre-snap, that route is likely getting taken away and you should sit on the curl route instead. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the HB out of the backfield is a green light to attack the flat immediately since backers rarely have the speed to stay in phase. Cover 2 shells with the corner sitting on the curl route can jump the route if the quarterback holds it too long, so timing the throw before the corner flattens out is critical. Blitz-heavy fronts that bring extra rushers off the edge can overwhelm the protection quickly since only the FB and offensive line are in-line blockers, so check for overload pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on the quick flat or hot route.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in zone coverage rather than blitz. Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety looks; if you see a two high shell rotate your eyes to the seam route since one safety has to widen with it. If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the flat route to a corner or out to create separation against a trailing defender since the flat alone is an easy sit-and-hit read for man defenders. Pair this play with FB Power or HB Gut earlier in a series to get linebackers to bite on run action, then come back to Z Curl once the defense starts crowding the box. Against teams that sit in Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the TE curl and HB flat combo since the seam will likely be taken away by the deep defenders.
