Z Close

Overview

Z Close takes the Weak I base look and pulls the flanker down tight to the formation, creating a condensed three-man surface on one side with the fullback offset away from the tight end. That alignment matters in Madden because it changes how the defense distributes safety help and forces linebackers to widen their run fits. The tighter Z split shortens the release distance on drive routes and shot plays, so concepts like PA Cntr Shot Post and Flanker Drive get their route stems into the second level faster than they would from a standard wide alignment.

The 21 personnel package is what makes this set dangerous. You get two backs in the box with a tight end attached, which reads as heavy run personnel and pulls base defense onto the field. Against those looks, your slot and tight end are running routes against linebackers and slower safeties instead of dedicated nickel corners. FB Power, HB Gut, and Counter F all attack downhill with a lead blocker, and once the defense commits linebackers to fill, the play-action family (PA Sprint HB Flat, PA Cntr Shot Post) punishes them with the exact same run key in the backfield.

Where Z Close separates itself from other Weak I sets is the compressed release combined with real passing structure. Slant Spacing and Z Curl give you horizontal answers against zone, 94 Will Alert X Lookie is a legitimate gadget wrinkle when opponents start user-locking your primary target, and the tight Z split means motion becomes a live tool. Sending the flanker across the formation pre-snap reveals man or zone immediately, and from a condensed alignment you can create instant leverage advantages on either side of the ball.

Strengths

  • Compressed Z alignment shortens route stems, so Flanker Drive and the drive concept off PA Cntr Shot Post hit the intermediate window before a user defender can close from depth
  • 21 personnel forces base defense on the field, isolating the tight end and flanker against linebackers and box safeties on Slant Spacing and Z Curl
  • Full run game menu (FB Power, HB Gut, Counter F) with a lead fullback, giving you three distinct downhill run fits from an identical pre-snap picture
  • Play-action shells sell the same backfield action as the run plays, so PA Sprint HB Flat and PA Cntr Shot Post punish linebackers who crash the mesh point
  • Tight Z split makes pre-snap motion cheap and fast, letting you diagnose man versus zone and flip leverage without burning your snap clock
  • 94 Will Alert X Lookie gives you a gadget answer that resets opponent tendencies when they start user-locking your best receiver

Weaknesses

  • Only three eligible receivers releasing on most plays, so five-man pressure and overload blitzes to the weak side can outnumber the protection before your fullback picks up the free rusher
  • The condensed surface invites press coverage and tight man, and without a wide split your outside receiver has no room to win with a release to the sideline
  • Heavy run personnel telegraphs intent to experienced opponents who will drop a safety into the box and dare you to throw from a two-man route concept
  • Play-action plays (PA Cntr Shot Post, PA Sprint HB Flat) have long developing windows and get killed by nano blitzes and edge pressure that beats the fullback block
  • Slant Spacing and Z Curl both work the same intermediate depth, so a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hook window can bracket both concepts at once

Usage Tips

Establish the run first with FB Power and HB Gut on early downs, then run PA Cntr Shot Post and PA Sprint HB Flat off the identical backfield read to punish linebackers who bite

Motion the Z across the formation pre-snap: if a defender follows step for step you have man, and Flanker Drive plus Slant Spacing become your primary man beaters

Against single-high looks with a safety cheating into the box, take the shot with PA Cntr Shot Post and hot route your tight end to a seam or corner to hold the free safety

Hot route the fullback to a flat or check release whenever you see a linebacker walked up on the edge, since your protection is thin on the weak side

Use Z Curl and Slant Spacing on third down in the 5 to 8 yard range, and pair a hot routed drag underneath to give yourself a checkdown against user defenders sitting in the curl window

Save 94 Will Alert X Lookie for a situation where the opponent has clearly keyed on your primary target, and use it to reset their pre-snap reads rather than as a base call
