Overview

Weak I Close tightens the split of both outside receivers down to roughly the numbers or inside them, which is the entire point of the set. Where standard Weak I sets push a receiver to the sideline and give you true isolation, Close compresses the formation so every route stem starts inside the tackle box extension. That means shorter distances to leverage, faster crossers, and stack releases that eat man coverage alive. Personnel is 21 with the fullback offset to the weak side and the tailback behind the quarterback, so you still get a two back run game with a tight end attached, but the compressed splits force defensive backs into tighter alignments where they cannot press with sideline help.

Strengths

  • Compressed splits turn Mesh and Bench Switch into true man beaters because the crossing receivers rub off each other inside the box, and defenders in Cover 1 get caught on traffic almost every rep.
  • Play action shots (PA Boot Lt, PA Boot Slide, PA Post Shot) sell hard from 21 personnel because the fullback and tailback both threaten the weak side run, which pulls linebackers forward and opens the intermediate hole shots.
  • Heavy run menu inside one set: FB Dive and HB Gut hit the A gaps immediately, Counter F pulls the fullback for a gap scheme look, and HB Zone Wk stretches the weak side without changing personnel or tipping the defense.
  • Stick and 94 Will give you quick zone beaters against Cover 3 and Cover 4 with the compressed splits creating natural voids in the flat that the corner has to travel a long way to reach.
  • Tight splits let you motion a receiver out to reveal man or zone before the snap, and you still have both backs available for block or route hot routes on the fly.

Weaknesses

  • Compressed splits mean no vertical route can win outside leverage cleanly, so Cover 2 and quarters corners sitting flat footed can squeeze everything without giving up the sideline.
  • Only three eligible route runners release on most concepts, and user controlled defenders in the middle of the field can sit on Mesh and the Stick portion of the play art because they know the routes are coming inside.
  • Edge pressure and overload blitzes to the tight end side can stress the protection since the fullback is offset weak and cannot always fan back across the formation in time.
  • 21 personnel telegraphs run heavy intent, so opponents will bring their base or run defense package and load the box, taking away FB Dive and HB Gut on early downs.
  • Play action concepts leave the quarterback deep and stationary, and any interior nano or A gap pressure kills PA Post Shot before the deep route develops.

Usage Tips

Open with FB Dive and HB Gut to establish the interior run threat, then run PA Boot Lt and PA Boot Slide off the exact same backfield action once linebackers start crashing.

Against single high looks, go straight to Mesh or Bench Switch and let the compressed splits create the rub, and hot route the fullback to a flat or angle route as your check down against man.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4, Stick and 94 Will are your reads: work the flat and stick portions first, and only push vertical if the safety cheats down on the run action.

Motion an outside receiver before the snap to diagnose coverage, and if a defender follows step for step, kill the zone beater and check to a crossing concept.

Save PA Post Shot for a second and short or first down after a chunk run when the defense is committed to stopping the ground game, and block the tailback to protect against interior heat.
