This is a pure run play with no play-action or pass concept attached, and the primary read is the fullback hitting the first open crease between the guards, with the HB flat route serving only as a pre-snap misdirection element.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the Mike linebacker is stacked tight behind the nose or shaded to a gap; a downhill Mike kills this play immediately. Watch safety depth: a single high safety cheating up into the box signals run support that can blow up the dive before the fullback reaches the line. Post-snap, user the Mike or a linebacker with quick gap integrity to fill the A gap immediately rather than reading blocks, since dive plays live and die on first-step penetration. This play struggles against 46-style fronts and heavy blitz packages with linebackers keying run gaps pre-snap, but it can gash light boxes (4 or 5 in the box) or defenses that overcommit to defending the HB flat action. Watch for a user spy or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field since they can close the crease before the fullback gets vertical.
Usage Tips
Use FB Dive on early downs (1st and 2nd and short) when you need a quick, low-risk gain to stay ahead of the chains.
Pre-snap, check for stacked boxes or six plus defenders in the tackle box; if the defense shows heavy run support, consider audibling to a play-action shot instead.
This play punishes aggressive linebackers who shoot gaps early, so bait blitz-heavy defenses by running it after showing HB Zone Wk or Counter F from the same set to keep linebacker flow honest.
Combine FB Dive with PA Boot Lt or PA Boot Slide out of the same formation so the defense has to respect the fullback dive action before you hit them with a boot pass off the same look.
Snap the ball quickly against nano blitz setups since the fullback's quick track through the A gap can beat delayed linebacker blitzes before they arrive.
