HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Weak I Close with 21 personnel, giving the FB and TE extra bodies at the point of attack. The diagram shows the HB stepping laterally before cutting upfield off the double team blocks from the interior line, reading the play side gap before pressing to the second level. This is a zone run play, not a man or gap scheme, so the primary read progression is playside double team to backside cutback lane depending on how the front flows.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the Mike linebacker's depth and alignment pre-snap, since a shaded Mike toward the play side signals the defense is keying the zone run. This play struggles against odd fronts with a true nose tackle who can two gap and clog the double team lanes. Look for safeties creeping into the box pre-snap, which indicates run support and a lower likelihood of hitting a big gain. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any linebacker flowing hard to the play side, since a disciplined backside player can blow up the cutback lane. Defenses that user the Mike linebacker and stack the box with an extra defender in the alley tend to shut this run down before it develops.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for a stacked box with extra linebackers, since this play needs numbers advantage to hit consistently.
Use the FB as a lead blocker and manually control him if the linebacker flow is heavy to the play side, allowing you to kick out the force defender.
Mix this in with FB Dive and HB Gut from the same Close set to keep the defense guessing on gap versus zone runs out of the same look.
Best used on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, consider hot routing the FB into a quick flare to give the QB an outlet instead of committing to the run.
