Breakdown

Flanker Drive out of Weak I Z Close (21 personnel) stacks two crossing routes underneath a deep dig, with the flanker running a drive route across the middle and a tight end or slot working an under route beneath it while a receiver clears out deep on a corner route from the backfield alignment. The fullback releases into the flat as a checkdown option against blitz. This is a classic Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams and hooks vacated by quarters defenders, with the primary read progression starting on the drive route working across the field, then working down to the underneath crosser, and finally the flat route as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, which signals Cover 4 and tells you the crossers underneath will be your best attack point. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers who crash down on the drive route open up the underneath crosser and flat route behind them. If the corner over the flanker presses and shows man coverage with a single high safety, expect the drive route to get jumped, so bail out to the flat or checkdown quickly. Beware of user-controlled defenders sitting in the underneath zone or spying the crosser, since a lurking linebacker can jump the drive route for a big turnover. Against a Cover 4 shell that gets an inside blitz, the fullback flat route becomes the fastest answer since the drive route takes longer to develop and the quarterback needs a quick outlet.

Usage Tips

Look for two-high safety shells pre-snap since this concept is labeled a Cover 4 beater and thrives against quarters coverage where safeties bail deep and leave the intermediate crossers open.

Use the drive route as your first read against zone coverage, but if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, work the flat route quickly since the drive route will get picked up by trailing defenders.

Hot route the fullback to a quick out or flat route if the offense faces a shorter down and distance, giving you a faster underneath option against blitz looks.

Pair this play with Z Curl and Slant Spacing in the same set to keep the defense honest, since all three attack different levels of the field and force linebackers to declare their drops.

Use PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Cntr Shot Post afterward to sell the same backfield action and freeze linebackers who started sitting on the drive route.
