PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out concept from Weak I Z Close that puts the QB on the move to the right while the run fake holds the second level. Off the play fake, the two receivers on the yellow routes stem vertically before breaking into deep crossers that stack the far sideline, giving the QB a double-move shot against overaggressive linebackers. The HB releases into the flat as the built-in checkdown while the TE runs a short out underneath, giving the sprinting QB a full high-low read from deep crossers to flat to shallow out. This is primarily a play-action shot play designed to counter man coverage and single-high safety looks, with the sprint action buying time and a run-pass conflict for the flowing defense.
Pre-snap, identify the safety depth and count the box: a stacked box with a single-high safety is begging for this play action shot over the top. Watch the linebackers at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake, the deep crossing routes will be wide open behind them, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 3 with aggressive run support. Key the flat defender and outside cornerback on the sprint side, since a corner blitz or aggressive flat defender jumping the HB route leaves the deep crossers unaccounted for in man coverage. Zone defenses that keep two deep safeties and stay disciplined on the run fake, like Cover 4 or Cover 2, will squeeze the crossing routes and force the QB down to the flat or the TE out as the real progression. User linebackers who spy the sprinting QB or sit in the flat lane can bait a bad throw, so respect a defender sitting in the throwing lane before committing to the deep crosser.
Use this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel counts when the defense is keying on your Weak I run game like FB Power or HB Gut, since the play fake carries more weight after you have established the ground attack. Check the safety alignment before the snap: single-high safety or a defense showing run blitz off the edge is exactly what this play wants to attack. Hot route the HB to a wheel if you see man coverage from the linebacker, turning the checkdown into a home run shot. If the corner is playing off or bailing into a deep zone, work the TE out route or the HB flat quickly off the sprint action rather than forcing the deep crossers into a covered shell. Pair this play in sequence with Slant Spacing or Z Curl to keep the defense honest on quick game before hitting them with the sprint action shot, and mix in Counter F or FB Power pre-snap motion looks so the defense cannot sit on the pass fake.
