Deuce Close

Overview

Deuce Close is the tightest 12 personnel alignment in Singleback, putting both tight ends on the line inside the tackles (one to each side or stacked depending on the play art) with the X and Z receivers reduced into condensed splits and the back set directly behind the quarterback. Where Singleback Wing Trips or Doubles spread the field horizontally and force the defense to declare coverage early, Deuce Close compresses everything between the numbers. That compression is the entire point: it invites base personnel and single-high shells, forces linebackers and safeties to fit tight run gaps, and gives you a two-way run threat with an extra gap on either side without ever subbing personnel.

The run game here is the foundation. Mtn Duo, Mtn HB Stretch, HB Wham, Counter Y, Motion Power, and Inside Zone Split let you attack the same front from four different blocking schemes, and the tight end alignment means the defense cannot tell which way the extra gap is coming until the snap. Jet Sweep and Motion Zone Toss add the perimeter answer when the box crowds, and the Gadget tag shows up in Zone Fake Jet and Fk Slide HB Stretch, where the jet motion pulls a defender out of his run fit before the handoff even happens.

The play action package is where the compressed splits pay off in the passing game. Because both tight ends and both receivers start inside the numbers, every vertical and crossing route in the set eats up grass on the release, and defenders in man coverage have to fight through traffic immediately. PA Deep Cross, PA X Post Cross, PA Post Dig, PA Boot Corner Post, and PA Mtn Spider Y Leak all attack the second and third levels off run action, while PA Drag Wheel and PA Sprint HB Flat isolate the back or a tight end on a linebacker in space. If a defense is playing a slower MLB or a box safety, Deuce Close is the fastest way to hunt that matchup without tipping it with a spread look.

Strengths

  • Elite run scheme diversity from one look: Mtn Duo, Counter Y, HB Wham, Motion Power, and HB Stretch all attack different gaps from the same alignment, so film study alone will not tell an opponent where the ball is going.
  • Compressed splits create natural rubs and traffic against man coverage, making PA Deep Cross, PA X Post Cross, and PA Post Cross reliable man beaters without needing hot route stacking.
  • Play action off legitimate run action pulls linebackers forward and opens the intermediate window, and PA Mtn Spider Y Leak plus PA Boot Corner Post attack single high safety shells at all three levels.
  • Jet motion plays (Jet Sweep, PA Jet Sweep, Zone Fake Jet, Fk Slide HB Stretch) force defenses to declare their leverage pre-snap, giving you a free read on man versus zone before the ball is snapped.
  • Zone beaters are built in: Stick, Spacing Switch, Corner Stops, Flood Trail, and Bench Z-Dig give clean flood and horizontal stretch answers against Cover 3 and Cover 4 without any hot route work.

Weaknesses

  • Condensed splits mean less field to work with on outside breaking routes, so aggressive press coverage on the boundary can squeeze the X and Z out of the play before the route develops.
  • Only one back in protection with tight ends often releasing on play action leaves you thin against A gap and overload pressure, and the deep dropback play action concepts take too long against a user-controlled blitzer.
  • Heavy 12 personnel invites base defense and nickel run fits, and if you cannot establish the run the set loses its play action leverage entirely.
  • Nano and edge blitzes to the tight end side punish the boot and sprint out concepts, since rolling toward pressure kills PA Boot Slide and PA Sprint Slide before the reads open.
  • Tendency abuse is real: opponents who see Deuce Close will crash the box, and without a spread audible package you can get stuck in a bad look on obvious passing downs.

Usage Tips

Use this set on first and second down and in short yardage, where the defense has to respect the run and your play action carries real weight. Live on the run plays early so the PA package sells later in the game.

Read the box pre-snap. Seven or more defenders in the box means check to Jet Sweep, Motion Zone Toss, or a quick game concept like Stick. Six or fewer means run Mtn Duo, Counter Y, or Inside Zone Split into the light front.

Use motion on every snap you can. Jet motion and Motion Zone Split tell you man versus zone instantly, and against man the trailing defender opens up the backside crossers on PA Deep Cross and PA X Post Cross.

Hot route a tight end to a block or keep the back in on the deeper play action shots (PA Deep Read, PA Stretch Shot, PA Post Dig) if your opponent is bringing user pressure. You give up a route but you keep the deep shot alive.

Against Cover 3 buzz or match coverage, go to Flood Trail, Corner Stops, or Spacing Switch and work the horizontal stretch. Against Cover 1 or Cover 0, take the mesh and crossing concepts and let the compressed splits create the natural pick.
