Breakdown

PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprintout concept out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel that shows heavy run-fake action before the QB rolls to the boundary. Off the play fake, the backside receiver runs a deep corner route while the two inline tight ends work a crossing combo underneath, one clearing out on a deep in and the other settling into a shallow drag against the grain. The HB releases into the flat off the fake to give the QB a quick outlet on the sprintout, while the boundary X runs an underneath drag away from the play side, making this primarily a zone beater designed to stress flat defenders and hole players with the natural high low created by the drag and flat combo, with the HB flat route as the first read and the crossing tight end as the deep progression if the flat is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the fake this play will hit the flat and drag routes wide open underneath. Identify the flat defender's positioning pre-snap since Cover 3 sky and Cover 4 shells put a hard eye on the HB flat release and can jump the route if the user commits early. Key the strong safety or overhang defender when tight ends cross underneath, a lurking defender sitting in that window can undercut the drag route and create a turnover opportunity. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops where deep defenders stay home on the corner route and shorten the sprintout throwing lanes. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge the QB is rolling toward can disrupt the sprint action, so watch for overload blitzes attacking the play side flat.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs or manageable third and short situations where defenses are more willing to bite on the run fake. Check for single high safety looks pre-snap since Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenders tend to overplay the run action and open up the flat and drag combos underneath. If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the crossing tight end into a deeper option or bump the corner route receiver's depth to stretch the zone vertically. Pair this call with Inside Zone Split or HB Stretch earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake and linebackers bite harder on the play action. Use the HB flat as your immediate answer against blitz looks since the sprint action gets the QB outside the pocket quickly and away from interior pressure.
